Hey everyone, I haven't been on here in forever, probably because my camper is a never-ending project (but I knew this going into it). Had water sneak into one of the frame uprights this winter, freeze, bulge out the section of tube, and I've had enough issues with water that I think I just need to weld a completely new frame again.

But the real reason I'm here is that I'd like to make a friend an RTT version and am hoping folks can chime in on more economical material solutions (than honeycomb panels). It's a hefty thread, and I'm sick with Covid, so give me a break if I missed it in my thread searching. I believe I saw some people are using 6mm alupanel, love to see some pictures of how many crossbars people are using under the floor, attachment, anything that might be helpful, would be helpful.

I've been trying to keep up with the thread as much as possible. Has any one attempted to do a version of Go Fast's transforma floor? I'm going to and seeing if anyone had any insights, suggestions etc...

 

If you look at my post just before yours, in the picture you can see I split the floor piece into three sections (vs. the escape hatch method), framed with 8020 (too heavy) so they're removable. They rest on 1/8" plate welded to the camper frame and sit evenly with the fixed floor section that overhangs the cab.

I was looking at that before I posted and was curious what you did because it doesn't look like any other designs I've come across. Do you have any close up photos you could share? Curious why you went with 3 rectangular pieces rather than 1 rectangular piece and 2 squares giving you a bit more versatility to a floor plan.

 

I did that on my long bed, when the floor is opened up I’ve got 5’ of space to stand in the bed

 

Thank you for sharing. I like the versatility of having different floor layouts. Have you finished your floor panels yet? I'm likely going to imitate the Go Fast floor edges with angle around the rectangular piece. Just seeing if I can see any detailed photos of any completed panels. Jealous of your 6' bed for this reason. All the room for activities.

 

Because simplicity! Next time I’m going to make a single panel framed with square tube + hinges like others have done. The modularity/versatility hasn’t been worth it for how I use the setup, my experience and pov only.

 

I like it! What are your floor panels made out of? Same composite material as your sides? Do they provide the rigidity that you need?

Yeah, I cut the floor into three sections after I had the cad files adjusted, bolted them up to the 8020 frames, voila. Extremely limited flex/give, haven't had a problem walking around on them without the pad.

 

What is everyone using on the bed rails? I’ve used butyl tape on them with my cap and I don’t really like it. When it’s warm out the tape slides around even with the weight of the cap on it. It also falls down in the holes in the bed rail that are left after removing the bed rail caps. I’ll post some pictures. But I’m looking for some better options.

 

Decided to 3D print these plugs to fill the holes. They are siliconed in place to seal them up.

I made a tarp that slides in there with the rear door open. Pretty handy when it’s raining or on the beach to have shade over the tailgate.
