Ideally, you want the filter in the "hot" line. The hot fluid keeps contaminates in suspension.

Of course, the fluid isn't cooling all that much - relatively - so either line will work.

Glad I found this post. I was racking my brain. I have a '15 and could never get the 2nd "AT TEMP" illumination to come on either after shifting into park. Tried it several times....nothing. Saw this post and just let it idle. The solid light came on in just under 20 minutes at 60° outside temp.

There were some changes for the '12 model. Perhaps we '12-'15 guys never get that 2nd light.

I was just checking mine, not changing it. Got a couple of drops out of the overflow. Went ahead and pumped about 2/3 of a quart in and repeated the check procedure. I let it drain until it was about a pencil lead thin stream. So I'm guessing around a 1/2 quart or so net.

53k miles. Never any performance issues. At 60k I'll will begin a series of drain and fills.

Thanks for the great write up. Did my 13 today at 78000 miles and 2.7 quarts of reddish stinkyness came out. Looked think and reddish (couple shades browner) Filled with 3 and left it at a trickle. Forgot washer. “Checked again” and left it with a washer and a fast drip.

I'm looking to replace my aux. transmission cooler with a larger unit. Does the truck always circulate the trans fluid through the entire aux. trans cooler, or does it need to reach a certain temperature to do this?

I'll be needing to perform the fluid level check, per this thread, following my install and want to make sure enough fluid is added in and accounted for.

That’s a great question. We only know how much our systems holds by either what the Manuel tells us or by how much we take out ( counting ounces). And how much we put back in ( counting ounces) and then doing a temp check and counting ounces that is not needed.

Since it’s a closed system,we need to include the ounces from your new cooler.

I would confirm my truck was at proper fluid level before install with the temp check procedure.

Find out how many ounces new cooler held.

Install new cooler plus add required ounces of new cooler plus another 1/2 qt. and do a temp. check.

I would assume the info on the new cooler also tells ya what it holds.[/QUOTE]

That's a great idea. I have a dedicated jumper wire that I keep in my tool box. But this would be even easier.

Where did you get the plug?

That's a good idea to check the volume of the new cooler.
I'm aiming to pickup one of the tru cool coolers and add a fan on top of that. I tend to carry a lot of camping gear and crawl slow in 4Lo, so I'm thinking the addition of a fan will help.

Gentlemen, Ive read the first and last page of this thread. I appreciate the write up... thank you.

Is the process on page 1 the same for the 3rd gen trucks? I have a ‘17 TRD DCLB 4x4.

I should have seen your reply coming from a mile away. Seems like snarky returns are the norm around here.

Said snarkedly: So there’s 60. Which one should I read? Or maybe you can just tell me.

No, not at all, there’s some pretty good info. In between the first and last post.

Dang... you guys are tough. Guess I have to read 58 pages... even though all this effort could have just been used to answer my question.

I don’t doubt that. Just not sure yet if any of it pertains to my truck. Guess I’ll read and find out.
