If you can't heli-coil it yourself and you've already drained the trans I would suggest getting one of those universal expanding rubber plugs. They are typically only 1/2" or so at auto parts stores but you can get all different sizes at marine places. It's certainly not a permanent fix but should be fine to get the truck to someone who can heli-coil it for you. Another reminder whenever draining a component on a vehicle. ALWAYS REMOVE THE FILL PLUG FIRST! Then if you run into trouble you can stop.

That said I still need to do this on mine. 116k now and no record of any transmission service from Toyota. Shifts perfect though. Although usually when you notice shifting problems it's a larger issue than a fluid drain/top off will fix.

Hardware store and or plumbing supply should have rubber plugs if you don't find them at auto store. Good idea 85GT

Printed off a data sheet, that said for the 2 wheel drive prerunners the indicator light would be the "D" indicator light. I assume that meant the "D"rive light ? not really sure, I took mine to a friend who used a temp gun, and we changed the rear trans seal that was leaking and drain and fill trans fluid. Easy job, only surprise I saw was when changing the seal, you had to take down the whole drive train...from Transmission to carrier bearing to real axle. Easy job though.

Do i fill the converter first and then bolt it on? or filled when installed? How many quarts? I got the info to check level from your thread, but im not sure if i have to fill converter before or after install. Thank you!!! very much for your help

so i live 3 hrs from my nearest dealer. preferring to order and ship, i tried the link to find the fluid from toyotapartsales.com and while they have it listed, i can't seem to purchase at this time. just curious if there were any other sites to get the fluid and crush washers???
