I just picked up a 2017 Sport 4x4 shortbed. I only have the D rings in the back of the bed. There are alumuminum looking brackets at the front of the bed. Are those strong enough to strap down a dirt bike? Anyone using a Bed Buddy in the 3rd Gen Tacomas? Recommendations for strapping a bike in the short bed? I found these two options with a little bit of surfing. Thoughts? I like the US Rack option with no drilling as long as it will fasten securely.

I like the idea in this thread but often carry two bikes.

I really like this option.. but I can't seem to get in touch with them.

This is a good idea but the 2017 doesn't have a front rail like the sides of the bed do... https://jpmetalfab.com/product/hook-ups-custom-tie-down-brackets/

For a half closed tailgate just loop the tailgate cables over or through the tailgate latches.
    Easy and free.

Get a smaller dirtbike or mini-bike, then you can close your tailgate.

Anyone ever stuffed 2 450s in a short bed?

I know the tailgate will be down but I'm having doubts about the factory tie down hooks

Not a problem at all. Done it several times, angling the front wheels inward helps the handlebars from hitting one another.

Im in the same boat as garrett75x. I often haul two CRF 250r race bikes in my truck. I'm not so much worried about the tie down hooks in the front. But what gets me is that with the tailgate down the rear tires still come about an inch or two past the tailgate. Originally I bought a bed extender thinking I would just leave the tailgate down and the bed extender would keep all my other gear from flying outta the bed but I cant clear the 2 inches that the tires hang past the tailgate. Any advice or am I left with trying to angle the front wheels in? (not even sure that would solve the bed extender clearance issue)

Are the straps adjustable? Im wondering if itll fit because my rear tires come about 2 inches past the end of the tailgate at its farthest point

Yup just like the cinch straps you tie it down with.
I carry a 450 and 501 and it works just fine 1.5 hour drive up to the mountains with ramps and gear bags in back.

This is brilliant! I was trying to figure out how to haul the CRF 450 with the tailgate up so I can tow a travel trailer and didn't think it was possible without removing a wheel. Now I can avoid the other sketchy solutions I was pondering... Problem solved.
    Thanks so much for sharing!!
