Thanks for the update! Makes this operation much more worth while knowing it'll last longer than most of the 1 month fixes. Saving this for a free weekend.

I think the chirping was coming from the brushes. The plastic housing that they slide in is crap. When I removed them I found that they were not worn evenly, not even close. I rapped some 220 grit around a 1 inch bar (same size as commutator) and resurfaced them. The fan has been silent for a few long days - time will tell.

I went back and had a look at JD's fix and noticed that his brush housing is completely different, mines a piece of plastic. 2010 TRD offroad

Great write up! The squeek was driving me crazy. Simple fix for someone without any mechanical skills. I did mine about 2 months ago and no more noise.

after 3.5 years the blower motor started to chirp quietly again on low speed. I plan to regrease everything in the next couple years.

Apologies for reviving a dead thread: I'm struggling to remove the fan from the motor. I've been sitting her slowly prying on it for the last 10 minutes with no change. Does anyone who has done this have a suggestion?

***EDIT*** Another five minutes and I figured it out! You can see your progress through the clear plastic!

I pulled my motor yesterday and replaced it with a new one. Is it possible that opening it and cleaning it as shown in this thread will make the old one useable as a spare?

My understanding is that they’ve redesigned the motor so it shouldn’t be a problem in the future. But if it becomes one, then yeah definitely feasible!

Out of curiosity, how much did a new motor run you?

That reminds me when I last did my blower motor squeak repair on the 2nd gen... Lost one of the springs and replaced it with the spring from a ball point pen. Worked flawlessly for a couple years.

There was a TSB for the chirp. I had the replacement unit installed during the warranty period and many years later its still quiet. The part shouldn't cost very much.

I had some issues with this step too. I used a crimping tool and it worked great to safely pry off the fan. Also, I wanted to provide some tips that may help other ppl. First off, DO NOT use grease on the Comm! I used some White Lithium Grease... bad idea. What happens is that the "brushes" rub on the comm and slowly disentegrate due to friction. The fragments fall down into the gaps on the comm. When these gaps fill up OR get clogged, then the noise happens b/c the "grit" from the brushes rubs in circles around the comm. The white lithium grease made the grit stick to the comm and clogged the gaps quickly so the noise came back after only about a week or so.

Also, steps 1 and 2 were not that clear for me on what to do. So I've posted some photos that may clarify what to do.

Step 1A. After removing the fan from your truck, you will need to remove these four screws prior step 3.
    rps20181215_201422.jpg

Step 2A. Here's my tip on removing the fan. It is just pushed onto the end of the spindle and held in place via friction. So I used a flat crimping tool and it worked perfect. Pry, rotate, pry, repeat.
    rps20181215_201341.jpg

Finally, here are all the tools I used. Note do not use the lithium grease, instead I cleaned the comm and used my air compressor to blow out all the gaps in the comm. Then I applied some Kleen Bore 3n1 oil. (The pipe is 3/4" Pex with fine sandpaper wrapped around it so I could sand down the brushes so they would evenly glide over the comm.)

My blower has been chirping for years on low speeds. I'll have to try this. I lost all my guns in a boating accident but I think I still have some slide glide :D
