You can get their regular stuff at most home centres , not sure about the patch kit you are looking at , haven't seen that before

For just a small drilled hole, I'd just epoxy it or JB Weld it. Leave the hole in the wall open for a few days while you use the upstairs plumbing and make sure it doesn't leak.

Added protection, after you JB Weld or Epoxy, wrap the pipe in rubber sheet and use a hose clam just above and just below your repair. Between the epoxy or JB Weld and the makeshift Fernco, it'll be fine as long as there aren't any vertical cracks in the pipe from putting the hole in. If you have a vertical crack, you need to replace that section of the pipe, no way around it.

yeah, i'm thinking this way would be pretty dead nuts reliable.... i could pick up some epoxy putty, then sand smooth after dries (or cement in a little pvc "plug"), and then cover over that w/ a rubber coupling (split it so i can fit it around pipe) and secure that w/ band clamp... i'm starting to like this idea... wouldn't be any worse than using the full fernco coupling anyway, right?

no visible cracks or anything in the pipe, ...just drilled into it, ...probably less traumatic than a nail puncture...

Did you get this fixed? I'm a plumber, get a 3" furnco and cut a hole in the wall big enough to work in, cut a sliver out of the pipe where the hole is, force the furnco on tighten and done. Anyone live above you? If so, ask them not to use any water wile you have the pipe cut apart. Don't just plug the hole wont last. If no one lives above you, and no second floor bath, it's just a vent, plug away. You can get furnco's at any Home Depot or Lowes

yep, i got the pow-r-patch kit, and applied it.... fyi, it comes in a pouch, w/ the two epoxy-like substances ready to mix, ...but i'll tell ya, it releases a horrible smell :D.. applied the epoxied-up mesh-like patch to the pipe, ..it turns yellow in color (pretty ugly)...

anyway, the problem w/ a coupling is that this waste pipe (3" pvc sch. 40) is up against the drywall (i.e. the OD of the pipe is up agains the inner wall of the dryall) even though it's a 2"x6" stud bay (pipe not centered in wall - hey i didn't build it :D), ..anyway so the thickness of a coupling would interfere w/ trying to patch over it w/ drywall and then installing my cabinet over that... a plastic access panel cover would've worked, but being behind my cabinet renders that inapplicable... so, what i did is patch over w/ drywall, but cut a 4" dia. hole and put a little plastic access cover over it, ..then cut out a 6" x 6" hole in the cabinet backing so i can check up on it...

i'll post picks in a bit..

ok,..here's the initial hole my dumbass made
    2rrqivm_e581b69bd0db7442d57850abaea7432ea3cf5767.jpg

..here's after applying pow-r-patch product (by fernco ;)).. it goes on gooey and smelly :D, ..mixing it up is exothermic (releases heat), and it turns yellow as it cures..
    20929uf_a668cbaed1b106884f744fd6985b336f0ccdf6e9.jpg

...and w/ cabinets up and shimmed, ...see lower left corner of leftmost cabinet - here's where the hole was, ..you can see the access hole i left (in the wall w/ a little plastic cover, and square hole in cabinet backing) for added insurance..
