    Hi I'm new here just bought a 05 Tacoma with 110k miles. Has 3 inch lift and mud tires.
    My ? Is what should I do to get better mpg. I read that adding cold air intake doesn't really do anything?
    What is the first thing you guys would change on your truck that's not crazy expensive? Exhaust system? Performance chip ? Any ideas thanks

    Regear to what though? Personally I am clueless when it comes to those gears in there.

    What size are the tires? It kind of depends on how tall they are. Regearing sounds like it usually costs in the $1,000+ range... I would say that if you want a fairly inexpensive mod and are thinking about an exhaust, MBRP makes one for about $300 that I saw on AutoAnything.com. If you want to spend $500-700, AFe makes a really good sounding one.

    Yeah I would say if you don't feel like it's underpowered I would just leave the gears how they are. An exhaust is a lot cheaper anyways:thumbsup:

    17x10? Should be like 35x10.50 or 285/75r17 for example

    I just talked to the owner of the best rated shop here in San Jose and he says I should just do a flowmaster muffler , says he thinks I don' need a whole cat back . He says he can put it on for 150$ I'm not sure if that includes the muffler or just work but sounds good to me lol. Do you guys think just a muffler would do it?

    A muffler or cat back alone won’t gain any hp or mpg. Same goes with a cold air intake.
    They make the engine sound louder.

    With 285/70/17 tires you could regear to a 4.10 gear to get more acceleration, and correct the speedo, gearing, and other things back to the stock 265 tire ratio. (Right now you are undergeared due to larger tires)

    If you are 4wd though you have to do both the front and rear differentials.

    That's the size right there. They're basically 33.8" tires. Use this calculator is you want measurements. The other numbers and stuff mean things but for now, don't worry about it. LT is load rating. Those will be heavier than a P rated tire.

    LT= Light Truck
    P= Passenger

    Louder would be nice also, I'm guessing a muffler wouldn't add any power right ? Would a whole cat back add any power?

    I think my limit would be about 1k to pay for whatever in going to do, would a regear be more than that ?

    The only way to get power out of exhaust and cold air intake, is to get full exhaust: (cat-less headers, y-pipe, and cat back sysetem); a higher quality boxed cold air intake, and then have the truck ecu tuned for these mods on a dyno machine.

    And/or TRD/URD supercharger.

    ^these are all in the $ thousands range.

    I put a Magnaflow muffler on. Strongly recommend it. It's a straight through muffler so it free's up a bit of Pony Power. Sounds awesome in my opinion too. If you keep the basic 2.5" in and out, it won't really get much louder, but if you go to like a 3" out it'll get louder.

    This should explain it I think. I haven't gotten to watch it since I'm at panera on my laptop and forgot my headphones.

    I’d just get the muffler, and save the rest for other stuff or some real power mods like I listed above. $1k alone really won’t get you anything meaningful.

    Ehhhhh you won't see any performance increase from Flowmaster really. If you do it'll be negligible. I personally think the Flowmasters mostly sound too ricey. Loud and Growly, but a little too in your face. I like my magnaflow cause it's loud, but quiet in the world of mufflers, really low tone, super growly, and I can feel the pony power get free'd up.
