I would tell him that doesn't matter, what matters is what you are willing to pay.

Not sure what the fear of "the box" is all about. I've done it 5 times now and simply say "No, thanks. No, thanks. No, thanks I'll pass. Yup, I'm sure, no thanks." It's really easy, but then again I know exactly what I want and am rather stubborn/persistent.

One FM challenged my logic, which I found to be hilarious, since he was trying to convince me to buy a $2500 warranty/maintenance plan on a new WRX. I ran the math for him and showed that it was basically pre-paying for all recommended maintenance PLUS paying interest on it, and that's at stealership prices. He leaned on the warranty side of it so I said, "Oh are Subarus prone to catastrophic failures? Should I be looking at something else?" To which he quickly shut up and moved on as I smirked awaiting his reply. I apparently got him so flustered, he forgot to take my stack of cash I was putting down; Of course I reminded him and gave him a couple jabs about it.

I have fun with these guys, although I don't necessarily enjoy all of the gamesmanship.

Almost didn't buy the truck I ordered cause I wasn't willing to give them an hour to sit in the box. Because of their bullshit, it took a couple extra days to buy.

Another way to avoid the box is to buy online. You will get the best price in most cases, because the online sales is usually fixed compensation, not commission. Also, very easy to get the online price from multiple dealers and then use them to get the lowest price on the one you like best. Also, avoid trading by selling your old rig outright or through a Carmax type sale. I bought my '16 MT for less than any used '14's in Colorado at the time. Online.

Start the negotiation online. This will get you closer to a real number much sooner. Once you go to the dealership, only negotiate ONLY drive off price, not payments or anything else. Once they get to your number, say "Add in (whatever upgrades you want) and I'll buy."

They will. You just have to be patient and negotiate the trade just like you do the new one. Keep in mind that they use Kelly black book not NADA. I think values in NADA are over valued. Probably why Tx uses to calculate sales tax on private sales.

+1, when I bought my 2013 I told the finance dude not to bother with extras. When he tried hard sell on warranty I turned and let him talk to the back of my head. I turned around when he offered interest rate that was .5% lower than best I could do. I asked him if we would have offered that rate without extended warranty and he said sure. I said BS but I will take and no warranty. He thought he could trick me with the monthly payment game. I just bought a 2017 Tundra and they did not push any extras but they did try to slip in a $599 dealer fee. I dealt with 2 finance guys and both tried it. Both had different answers when I asked what it was for. 2nd one said it was something they charge all customers. I replied with not me and here are your keys.

Try not to focus on a monthly payment. Look at the big picture. What is the bottom line of purchase?
Inform dealership what your bottom line price is and stick to that price. You walked into the dealership you know how to walk out of the dealership.

Personally I never bought an extended warranty although the dealer gave me a lifetime warranty for free on the whole drivetrain, so I was very happy...extended warranties are a waste of money when you factor them into your payment and finance it, then you pay about 2-3 times the original cost
