I'm pretty sure he's claiming that "most of the time" on the highway his scan gauge reads 30+

But pretty much everyone gets better mileage than me, pushing around 33s in start and stop go and wait rush hour traffic.

    Exactly why I asked .

Average MPG is miles traveled divided by gallons of fuel consumed .

What kind of miles are you seeing to a tank OP ?

The higher your instantaneous readings are at a constant the better your mpg average will be.yes it may say I'm getting 85 mpg but of course that doesn't mean that will be my tank average. 32.4 mpg is my ”real world mileage” I take the tank average given by my scangauge at a fill up then I manually do the math. 560 miles divided by 17.3 gallons equals 32.4 mpg. that was my last fill up and pretty much the average after about ten tanks. (32.345 mpg)

Keep in mind to achieve such mileage I drive like a grandma on a low traffic highway when I'm approaching any hill I will take advantage of any flat spot or down sloap to gain speed for momentum and almost always am slowly losing speed as I go up hill but rarely dropping under 57

On my rig that equates to about 2300 RPM, where I've logged my best fuel mileage as well (26.7). Camping gear, 2 people, 2/3 flats, 1/3 moderate grades.
I like to run faster, 75-ish MPH which puts me a shade under 2700 RPM. I take a mileage hit, of course, but it's still very good.

I eventually regeared to 4.88. With 4.10 gears I pretty much treated my transmission as a 4 speed.

But the 4cyl comes into the power band pretty good above 3000 rpm, so if you shift to stay around/above there, the hill slowdown factor isn't too bad. If you have to slow down for someone else, well it can take a while to get back to speed.

Holds speed in 5th reasonably well at 70mph 2800 rpm on mild climbs. I downshift if I feel I'm putting my foot into it to hold speed, which is what an automatic would do.

Won't be winning any races but it works for me. And I like having the more compact regular cab.

But I've concluded over time that if you're going to run LT285/75R16 or equivalent, the extra power required to spin those tires pretty much negates any mpg advantage the 4cyl originally enjoyed.

Damn, wouldn't want to be stuck behind you. impressive mpg to say the least. I'm happy to get 25 mpg with a semi lead foot and 5 lug.

I consider the start of the power band to be 2300 in my rig.
I can approach and pull a typical grade from that RPM. If I'm below that RPM I may have to grab 4th.
I don't spin up to 3K but for only a brief second while upshifting, if at all.

Typically don't have a need to run up there unless I'm racing a hot chick in a Bimmer or somethin'.

Throw on a dt header and see what that does to yourpower band. To say the least its sexy! it will give you a slight mpg increase also
