I have a 2019 Tacoma 4-door, with 5-foot bed and an ARE cap with Yakima rails. I plan to haul a 12-14 foot kayak.

What's best way to do this? My concern with J-hooks on the rails is that the kayak would stick out behind the truck 5 feet.

It seems to make more sense to put one rack on cab and one on cap, to keep boat over truck.

Has anyone does this, or is there a better way? Any help is great. Appreciate it.

    My math logic:

    Kayak centered over 5' cap:

    12' - 5' = 7' divided by 2 = 3.5' overhanging back and over cab

    14' - 5' = 9' divided by 2 = 4.5' overhanging back and over cab

The other alternative could be just to use roof racks and the J hooks???

I struggled with this debate for a long time. I used to haul mine like this, before I got my ARE cap:

Then I got the ARE cap and ordered it with the Yakima racks to haul the kayaks. I got it all set up and put the Kayaks up there and there was just no way I was going to be comfortable doing long trips with them up there. I wound up getting two inflatable kayaks instead, so I can just keep them in the bed.

I think J hooks on the Yakima racks are really your only option if you’re comfortable with it.

I haul canoes and kayaks that vary in length from 8' to 16' long. I recommend using a single cross bar over the front of the cab and a single bar on the Yakima rails. My 12' lg. Esquif Adirondack canoe fits perfectly on the front cross bar and the rear cross bar on my ARE shell. The cross bar on the shell can be positioned on the tracks to best support your boat. I have the HD cross bars on Baseline towers on the shell and a single round bar on Baseline towers over the cab. The three cross bar system works for all my boats, but you may only need two crossbars if you are only carrying 12' long boats. As noted by @PacoDevo, do the math to center your boats and set up your racks for the minimum overhang.

You can use which ever cross bars work best for the boats you plan to carry on your truck. Go to a good rack dealer to help you determine which racks will work best for you!

Multiple ways. An extension off the receiver works well for the bigger stuff. That's 13' and has room to go

Just make sure you use something to cover the front of the Kayaks so they don’t scuff the paint on the side of the truck. I used pillowcases and it worked well. You can see one on the right side kayak if you zoom in.

12' on a factory rack. Thousands of KM, no issues.

I've done roof racks... I've done bed racks...

Now I'm currently doing an inflatable kayak.
