I finally couldn't stand it anymore! The paint on my 1996 Toyota Tacoma had oxidized so much that I couldn't take it anymore. So after trying and doing what all those Youtube videos say, regarding "bring back your old oxidized paint to look like new", with no results even close to what those Youtube videos show, I finally decided to just have it painted at a reputable shop. It cost me $1700, which is a good price in the San Francisco Bay area. But of course, during the prep process, they removed all decals, including the logo on the tailgate, which I knew would happen. I had previously replaced my tailgate when some fool backed into my tailgate at Walmart, and dented it, so I knew where to get a quality replacement logo for the tailgate. I can highly recommend James Dean Creations [http://www.jamesdeancreations.com] for replacement logos for many makes and models of cars and trucks. They have quality products with great instructions on how to install. I admit that the first time I did it, it scared me to death, as I just KNEW I was going to make a mistake! But the instructions were great and I was successful. This time, I ordered the logo and was quite confident that I could do it. So I decided to video the process, and the resulting video is now posted on Youtube. I thought some people here might like the video and the information! Here is the link:

It is a place in Oakland Ca called "The New Earl Scheib", but of course, it is not affiliated with the old "Earl Scheib" paint shops of the olden days where they would paint an entire car for only $39.95! That company went out of business many years ago! These guys just bought the building where the old Earl Scheib used to operate, and just left the signage up! Gotta' love it! They did change it so they are called "The New Earl Scheib of Oakland". It is basically a guy named Raul who has quite a crew. They just paint cars and trucks and I have to say that they do excellent work! Although I much prefer original everything on my truck, in this case, I just had to have it painted, and I think the result was worth it!

What kind of paint did they use? Single stage, integrated clear coat, etc etc?

Did they strip to the body, or just paint over the existing finish after minimal sanding?

OK, get technical on me! Seriously though, I don't know. I DO know they had to sand as they had to remove the decals that came on the sides, as well as the decal logo on the tailgate. I also know they had some serious sanding to do on the hood and roof, as well as the sides because of the serious oxidation. However, I just also posted a before and after video I just completed making, of the paint job. Here is the link:

Just curious, they way a shop prepares a body before painting it has a serious and profound impact on the quality of the finish.

    Looks great.

I know, and your questions were valid. The shop is known for doing good paint jobs, as I did check around before committing to the job. However, looking back on it, I probably should have asked the very questions you put forth. Still though, the end result was really great, and a HUGE improvement over the pathetic oxidation that I had been having to look at on a daily basis!
