How to install trim piece for OEM style grille?

My old 2005 grille is in need to replacement. The trim piece flew off on the freeway years ago. I am going to replace the entire grille as I cannot locate the trim piece separately.

My problem is that I can't figure out how to anchor the trim piece to the grille itself? The trim piece has tabs that guide into the main grille, but it doesn't stay put. Am I supposed to bend the tabs after its inserted?

 

Can you take a pic of which trim piece (or the hole where the old one was) you are talking about?
