Obviously i wished i had a.tesla where i could keep the AC on in electric mode but i can't. I would like to travel with my dog and while ttavelling, play a few golf courses.
The question is, if i am travelling with him, how can i keep him safe and cool in the canopy without him overheating?
I have a canopy, and i can keep the windows open and i was thinking of installing one of those mesh materials in the canopy back where rhe tail gate can be kept down to prevent him from escaping or atolen. Any ideas on creating wind flow thru the truck bed or keep it it cool while im away from the truck for about 4 hrs?
    Thanks!

Please dont leave dog in truck for 4 hours! Drop him off at a doggie daycare while you go golf.

(OP raises an interesting issue, in the context of a warming environment and emergency cooling protocols)
Some of the ways to keep a dog (or any animal) cool in extreme heat in UNAVOIDABLE situations would be to first and foremost provide plenty of water and shelter from direct sun.
Use ice to keep water cool. Use a solar powered fan. Soak the dog with cool water.
Tell duggie what a good duggie duggie is, just to be sure.
But maybe a dog owner wants to chime in here.

edit: and yeah, I’m hella calling the cops if I see a pooch in a car in a golfing parking lot.

Yeah find some dog sitters near the course, 5 mins to run into a corner store sure, not to play a round of golf...

Dogs are family too, wouldn’t leave your son in the car to play a round of golf.

If I see him in there , you’re coming back to at least one broken window, the police and maybe not getting your dog back. Heck get the cart and if playing by yourself take him on the course with you. Ive see a few well behaved dogs on the cart. If they give ya crap he’s a “support” animal. We all know you can use that on the course when faced with a 3 footer for eagle.

OP...Don't leave the dog in the cab or in the bed under a canopy. I would call the local Humane/Police if I saw this situation.

Leave your dog at home or at a dog daycare or ask the clubhouse if the dog could be tethered to a nearby tree or ask the clubhouse if the dog could join for the 18.

The dog will need shade, water, air flow.

In this area, we are pushing 110*F heat index for the next 10 days, I know not as severe as others. I walk my mini-schnauzer 3X daily. The 7 am walk is about 45-60 minutes, the 5 pm walk is now 15-20 minutes. The 5 pm walk was 45-60 minutes. Then the 10 pm walk is now 45-60 minutes, this was 15-20 minutes.

Tip: Check the pavement/asphalt temperature to avoid burning paws. Hold your palm on the pavement for a slow 5 count. If you can make the 5 count comfortably, then the dog can walk comfortably.

I have put a tarp across the canopy on my roof rack to shade the canopy from direct sunlight. This also provides an air buffer between the canopy and the tarp. The more of the canopy that you can cover, the cooler it will be. Obviously, you will not be able to cool the canopy below ambient temperature this way, but it does make a significant difference. Use a heavy silver colored tarp for best results, and make sure to keep as much fresh air circulating as possible.

I am an animal lover - see my build if you have doubts. I don't advocate leaving your dog in extreme heat, but this is a cool (pun intended) way to help your best friend stay comfy while you knock a ball around for a few hours.

It makes me crazy to read threats when you are looking for a good solution to keeping your pup comfy. Nobody should be threatened for asking for help.

I dont think any threats were given. But its all personal perception i guess. To me, owning a pet is a massive responsibility. You dont leave them in a car, you dont go to work for 12 hours and leave them in a crate or just locked inside a home, and you dont skimp on medical care. A pet is 100 percent dependant on you, the owner, for all of its care. They arent a stuffed animal there to just keep you company when you watch tv.
I pay a dog walker to come to my home 5 days a week. Its a huge commitment. And you cant ignore a pets care to suit your own needs. Golf or otherwise.
Ill be making a massive cross country trip in a few months, with the dog. And his care is a huge factor in how that trip plays out.

So to me, to even read the OPs original question, it does bug me. Want to have a pet? Then make sure you have the cash to properly care for it and not leave it in the truck for hours. Thats it.

Some people have pets just as status symbols and that makes me beyond sick. My dog is my highest priority, so much so that I’ve turned down job offers if Juno can’t go with me like she does now. I make her homemade food, because ya know, she has taste buds like we do. Brown pebbles for dinner every night sounds like a shit life.

OP lost me at golf course. While you enjoy your privileged distraction in the form of golf (boring), your dog is wondering why he or she isn’t with you. Be better.

Im w you. I got my shepherd from a shelter a few tears ago. Horrible ear infections. Well, about 10k later in testing and treatments, he is good to go, and i give him an injection once a week so it stays that way. Hell yeah id like to have that money back, but i wasnt going to ignore things because i wanted to save the cash.

many hold themselves to be the arbiter of good/bad..................right/wrong

yet simply cursory observation of their lives not evident they are as they think of themselves

under similar circumstance many will throw a frisbee / stick & have same dog chase in the sun at the park

    fun .................right ??

ambiant temps accelerate & become extreme inside ANY vehicle

    many proffered accomodations outside

self righteous is not a solution

If you wanna play golf for hours on end, you shouldn’t have gotten a dog. Leave the dog at home.

You could put a call in to your local humane society to see if they have any suggestions. You never know. I’m guessing they’ll just say don’t do that, we’ll find and arrest you if you do that.

I once had a solar powered fan you stick in the window, roll the window up to snug it in place. MAYBE 2 of those and the sliding window open with something in it to keep him from jumping out. Then experiment to see what the temperature reaches. That and a big bowl of water with a huge chunk of ice MIGHT work. Experiment first please. Not oops my dog died. They make thermometers that have peak high and low record saved.

Yet the best suggestion is don’t do that.

My last dog who died of old age last year, we had a love hate thing. He’d bite me at least once a week and was really mean and grumpy. Yet he’d scream like a baby for hours if I’d leave the house without him. Still l wouldn’t leave him to bake to death.

Get a window mount AC and a generator, and set it up in the side of your canopy. There, problem solved. Just make sure it's a thermostat based AC, so you don't turn him into a popsicle.
