Since the dealer did not give you the tailgate key, also check and see if you got 4 bed rail cleats.

Should have been on the Keychain with the fob. Did the Keychain have two metal tags...those are the codes they use to cut the spare keys. Make them cut you two for the inconvienece.

My dealership told me the same thing. They're clueless. My wife found it in a plastic bag under the passenger seat. Our salesman and I went looking in a Limited and couldn't locate it. Feel like someone is chucking it during the vehicle prep.

The more important piece of info is what happens if that key gets lost, is it easy to get a replacement? Typically you can just have a dealer look up the key code and cut you a new key, but if they look up the key code, will they get the code for the ignition key (inverted cut) or the tail gate key? My guess? Just the ignition.

Long story short: I recommend getting a copy made in case you lose it.

This just happened to me when I picked my truck up earlier tonight. The bag was "hidden" pretty well in the glove box, but the dealership was clueless nonetheless.

It only cost about $15 - $20 to add power tail gate lock / unlock and1 hour of your time, screw needing a key, just convert it, if you're mildly handy I think this was a super easy mod, there's a thread on it with instructions / pics.

Did you look to see how old this thread is?
2016s required a separate key for the tailgate. 2017+ they made it work with the fob key.

This is what is known in the industry as “continuous improvement”. In Toyota’s case, slow but continuous. In 2021, maybe they’ll have a power tailgate; 2023, power seats. Since I have a 2016, I should probably get a spare key made in case my Pop’n’Loc fails.
