Holy shit that really bites OP. That tree must have been rotting on the inside, I don't see how a truck doing 20 could have done that otherwise. Either way, glad you are ok, looks like the tree didn't compress the cab that much, hope you can get another truck soon!

Edit: well it looks like you're back in business with another truck! Is it just about the same as you're old one? I need to put one of those no text stickers on my bumper, my friend had a stack of those in the glove box of his car about a week ago, offered me to take one and I forgot to grab it when I got out haha. Hope he still has some extras next time I see him.

    3 letters:
    ARB

imagine a truck doing 20mph hitting an 8"diamter pine tree, and the proceeding to drive it home because there is nothing mechanically wrong with the truck minus a bent frame. ARB proved themselves here. I bet whoever bought my truck at the auction salvaged that bumper (keep an eye out for it). The bumper itself looked fine; I busted about 8 (1/2") bolts that attach the bumper to the mounting bracket and frame. The bracket got mangled and the crumple-zone on the frame was crushed, but it looked like the bumper itself didn't sustain any noticeable damage that would render it scrap. i wish I had taken more photos.

You can't see from the photos, but the tree actually broke about 6-7feet up. When I hit it, I ramped up the tree apparently for a good distance based on bark damage inspected the next day.

As for the tree, it was a live and healthy ponderosa pine about 8" diameter. However, it was one of those "split-trees" that have two trunks. As it happens the second trunk lies directly behind the first one from the angle I had hit it at. If it wasn't split I would have likely just ramped up on the tree and pushed it over.. Because the approach angle of the bumper, I did not simply just have a solid wall-to-wall impact, but instead, as the ARB engineers planned, it pushed the impacted object down under the vehicle and I ramped up the tree 6-7 feet bumper height. When I slid down, the tree braced by its Siamese twin behind it and severely crunched by steel upon steel traveling at a great velocity, proceeded to fall on top of the assailant.

If it wasn't for the crushed cab it wouldn't be totaled. Someone will bend that frame straight and screw the dented cab. gonna be a helluva deal. State Farm is getting theirs I'm sure outta the auction saying every part, including the radiator could be salvaged. Like I said, mechanically, it was fine, cosmetically, ouch... If the truck had had a stock bumper, i bet it would have been totaled as well, but instead of the frame and cab, everything under the hood would have been battered. Nothing was touched here.

And if you suspect I was going faster than that, the fact that my airbags didnt deploy proves i wasnt saying the bags are velocity (or negative velocity) sensor units as opposed to impact sensor airbags.

IDK, i think ARB saved my ass and the truck. Any thoughts?

I'd say the arb saved the truck, if the airbags didn't deploy because of the bumper (not sure how the system works) it may not be a good thing
