i bought some duplicolor wheel paint and i test painted some things so i could hold it up against the truck to see what the color looks like

but for some reason they keep drying to a white hazy finish.
i shook them over a minute..sun was up..i even tried this trick by soaking the cans in lukewarm water to make them spray better.
    i don't get it

there are some other paints where i barely even shake them and its kind of wet out and they dry fine.

feeling a little frustrated, any ideas?

Huh..that is odd..I do know what your talking about tho. I have seen it before on some paints somewhere.

What did you paint? I think it could be a reaction to what you painted possibly..

an empty water gallon and an aluminum can..
if it was a weird reaction i would think the aluminum can would come out fine right?

i will be painting over my dipped wheels so i still have the option of pulling them off.

    Hmmm that is odd.

Not sure how well the paint will stick to the dip.

Could just be lemon cans? I'm not sure man

painting over plastidip has been done before, so i'm not to worried about that.

I am looking to paint my stock steel wheels ('13) black, but I dont like the completely black look, nor the totally blinged out look.

I am looking into the possibility of keeping my lugs as they are, as well as gluing some SS nuts to the rims somehow.

Anyone ever heard of anyone trying this? Any known issues or suggestions as to how to go about it, what product to use, etc?

Not painting the lugs will be easy. The other spots you'll have to cut tape for strategically. But it's do able. Go for it man!

Clear coat would make it a bit glossy..so I wouldn't.

I was talking with some guy who painted the wheels on his Wrangler with Rust-Oleum bed liner spray and they looked great. They did not look DIY. I'm debating about doing that myself.

I used to work for a company that made cranes and excavators. The rims came primed but not painted to our color. The guys in the paint booth used vaseline on the tires as described above because it was the fastest way to mask the tires, which were already on the machine by the way. They also used the vaseline on their faces and necks where they weren't covered by their respirators. Any overspray that got on their skin washed right off that way. They went through LOTS of vaseline! I'm sure, if there was a better way to do it, those guys would have found it.

    Good thread! :proposetoast:

Has anyone tried to paint the wheels a color? I have stainless trim rings on my wheel with chromed lug nuts and it really sets the truck off nicely. But I'd like to paint the wheels. Any suggestions?

Did you ever do this? I've been thinking about this for a while. I have the 2007 factory TRD offroad wheels. Thinking about taping off the outside faces and painting the inset areas. It may be tedious but I think it would look great with the inset areas being either black or graphite.
