    Hello,

I bought my tacoma new in 2006 and have loved everything about it except this anti-theft immobilizer thing that won't allow my truck to start without having it in the truck. It is now in very rough shape and even with a new batter in the device it won't let my truck start without hold this small button.

I have no idea what to search for to find out what the name/brand of this device is or even how to remove it from my truck. See attached image.

    Thanks for any help.

I have a 2006 also, I have a chip in my key & a receiver in the steering post wrapped around the ignition switch. I have a stock keyless entry remote that doesn't look like the one you show in the picture.
I'm really curious what you have there?

This transmitter (key fob) seen attached in the picture is slowing dying and will soon give out I assume. There is no writing on it and the replacement has already been broken. If I can find and program a replacement that would be a fix as well. I just don't know what to call this thing to be able to search for one. My first method would be removing the receiver from the truck wherever it is.

I'm thinking it's an aftermarket device?
I don't recall seeing that in the owners manual?

Do you have the flashing red light in the dash when you pull out the key?

I believe so yes. It is the fat rubberized key and my spare key is the same as I don't have an all metal key version.

If it is aftermarket then it would have been installed by the dealer. I don't have any info on it. Maybe my best bet is go down to the dealer (which I usually hate).

    This is aftermarket for sure.

I'd look under the dash for any 3rd party boxes, figure out what wires it's tapped into and remove it. Might be better to have a shop do it for you in case if screws something up you don't have to deal with it.

If you have the flashing red light, then the other remote is an aftermarket alarm with a ignition cutout, you have to pull out that relay & splice the wires back to stock.

Yeah I have the red flashing light on the dash. Ok this is some good info guys. I was unsure if it was aftermarket since my sister also has a Camry around the same year with this device but again from the same dealership. I think I will poke around looking for an aftermarket device somewhere.

it's probably on the left side kick panel or above lower dash panel, the cut off wires connect to the heavy wires off the ign switch either in post trim or by fuse box, you can't miss it.

Just in case. Some pictures with better light. attached. Where the open square is showing the small button there used to be a rubbery sticker with a thumb print on it.

Update: It was much easier than expected. This guy was attached to the Starter relay location in the engine compartment. Pulled it out and bought a new starter relay. Couldn't be happier.

Interesting. I've never seen it done like that. Most of the time all of the connections are made under the dash before it gets to that point. Seems easier to remove that way though.
