I have removed the serpentine belt from many vehicles but I cant seem to figure the one on my 99 Tacoma 3.7L v6 out. I need to replace my power steering pulley and maybe even the pump because of a noise its making. When I turn the wheel it makes a squealing noise and when I looked under the hood while my wife turned the wheel I see that the power steering pulley stays still causing this noise. The only problem I have is locating the belt tensioner on this vehicle.... does anyone have a picture i can see or an explanation of where I might be able to find this? thanks much!

Taco doesn't have a serpentine belt, it has seperate belts that run the AC, alternator and PS pump.

To remove the PS pump belt I believe the tensioner IS the alternator. It's been a while since I removed mine but most vehicles use the alternator as the tensioner.

If a 99 v-6 is like my 98 v-6 then there are 3 separate belts for alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor. None of these belts are particularily easy to replace as Toyota has hidden the adjustment well out of sight(alternator is a bit easier. Toyota has also stuck the most important belts the alternator and power steering behind the compressor belt so it has to be removed to get at the other 2. It's also likely that the adjusters are pretty much seized up so you will have to soak them down with penetrating oil before you can do anything. Good Luck

By god your right!!! I never realized there are 3 belts.... First vehicle I've work on with more than one.... Although the power Steering belt on mine appears to be in front of all the others so I don't think I'll have to remove anything extra.... Here are some pictures, anyone know where the bolt I'm looking for is located???

I just went outside and took a pic of my filthy engine bay. I circled the pinch bolt and adjuster on the PS pump. The big bolt in the slot must be loosened, then you simply turn that long bolt to tighten or loosen the belt.

So.... I messed with that bolt today and went from as tight as it would go to as loose as it would go with no change in pulley tension.. I noticed that the belt that I'm trying to remove is EXTREMELY tight.. more than the other 2. It also appears to be the only one that has been replaced before and I noticed that the number on the belt is different than the one you sent me a picture of. I'm wondering if its the wrong size and that is my problem?? Yours says "7608CC98" mine says "7609BA56". If this fixes the noise without having to replace the pulley or pump that would be nice!! thoughts?

You have to also loose the bot that hold on the alternator. Put a piece of wood on it and whack it with a hammer. also make sure that the back nut of the tensioner has enough thread showing to allow it to move.

Belts also strech over use. So id run it. It'll loosen up. Sometimes too much and you'll have to re tighten it. If you REALLY think its WAY too tight. Just go get a longer belt. 3/8'' longer or so.

The alternator belt is a different belt completely. I need to remove the PS pump belt which is separate from the belt on my alternator. There are two bolts that appear to loosen/tighten the PS pump belt. One holds the bolt in place and the other is the actual bolt. When I turn the bolt either way (all the way in either direction) it doesn't change the tension of the belt which leads me to believe that the current belt on the PS pump is way to small.

The whole reason for removal is that it makes a whining noise on start and at a full turn. which originally I thought might be the PS Pump or PS Pump pulley. I noticed when it is making the noise at full turn, the PS pump pulley stops moving as the belt runs over it. Still haven't figured this thing out....:(

ah well same thing. loosen the mounting bolt too and whack it with wood/hammer combo as said before. The PS is a bit a a bitch to get to move.

Id say the belt is maybe old and lost its grip and is wore out on the PS if its sliding over it. or it need tightened.
