start from least to most aggressive in that order. i'd start with goo gone, lots of it (been times for me that it worked when rubbing alcohol didn't) then i'd move on to 90% iso alcohol.. then if that didn't work rub it out by hand with some polishing compound.

if you're not familiar with auto paint detailing, there are basically two stages to it. first stage is the more abrasive of the two, the stuff kinda feels like a heavy shampoo. then the second stage is finishing, which is of course lighter and less aggressive, meant to remove the finer things and leave a proper finish.

you can find decent versions of these products these days at places like autozone, they'll have basically the entry level stuff from brands such as Meguiar's which is a good company with their own R&D. just make sure you're getting whichever of the two stages you're comfortable with and a few microfiber towels and apply some elbow grease. it'll take a few, you'll need one of those little rolling stools or whatever.

if you get to that point and its still not gone you've spent too much time and you should then take it to a detail place and have them just machine polish the door and be done with it, imo =D

What you have there is oxidized paint where the letters were not and fresh / unoxidized paint where the lettering protected it from the sun's rays. You're not going to remove the ghosting from the lettering because there's nothing there that needs removing. What you do need to do is have a good detailer polish / correct the paint on the whole truck to match what's where the lettering was. What this actually shows is how oxidized the rest of the paint really is.

..except its not, if the OP's title is to be taken at face value. he's implying there's a layer of something which is probly comprised of some of the adhesive and possibly a thin backing layer of material of some sort.

either way it costs him nothing but a bottle of goo-gone and some elbow grease to test the theory. if there's something on there that you can feel with your fingers/fingernail then a buffer isn't called for just yet, all it would do is foul the pad.

in any case, post a pic of the "after" result, OP =D
