I used the balljoint "c" clamp/puller from autozone and also used some sockets.

Just picked up a 2004 with 103k miles on it.
My carrier bearing allows the driveshaft to move around quite a bit. But the truck is smooth up to 80 mph, no vibrations. When you guys are replacing your bearings is it because you notice driveline vibrations? Or just change it out because you feel you should?

I replaced mine because I developed a squeaking sound that was intermittent and I also had a mild vibe. I wasn't sure if it was the center bearing or u-joints so I replaced my u-joints also, while I had the driveshaft out. My bearing had a lot of play so I was sure it needed to be swapped out even tho it may not have been the cause of the noise. In the end, all said and done, no more vibes, and no more squeak-squeak.

mine was because of lots of vib/noise and when I went and took a look at the center bearing the rubber supporting the bearing was all roached out...

    I followed these instructions mostly:

I disconnected the double carddian flange from the flange attached to the center carrier bearing only.
To disconnect and separate once the 4 bolts removed, I turned on the engine and shifted to 'R'.

Replaced with IEDLS poly bushing but had to fab up a flat steel bar to hold poly bushing in.
Jacked up rear axle and spun driveshaft to matching marked flange.

Firms up driveline but didn't cure squeak = thinking u-joint

So i just did this job and it went great!!

One problem though. I noticed a faint squeaking noise when i first started rolling. I don't hear it anymore but when I reach and feel the drive shaft not the flange side but the other side it is extremely hot. I did put grease on it also so I don't know why it is SO hot. I have to travel a long distance in the next couple days and could use some advice. Thanks

Here it is. I'm pointing to where it gets hot. As I've driven it more I noticed it is not as hot as it was earlier today. I noticed this issuer popped up in this thread a few times and there was never an answer. I think I know now. There is a note that comes in the package that says to put grease between the outer seal and the bearing. I put grease on both sides but didn't pack it in on the side that is getting hot as much as the side where the flange goes on. I wonder if I would need to take it back off and try to tap that carrier bearing down and pack more grease in there. My dad says it should be fine and will work itself out but I'm just not sure.

Not sure but the carrier bearing itself is not getting hot. Appreciate your help. I'll definitely keep an eye on it.

This truck has truly been a blessing! I got it new in 2002 as a freshman in college and it now has just over 500,000 miles and it's had a 3in lift since 27,000 miles. Best trucks on the road

Is there a different part number for 05-15 trucks? Could not find it and parts place says this part number does not match for my 09.

I'm guessing likely, in 2005 they redesigned the whole truck, aka second generation Tacoma.
