A friend of mine has a first gen with over 150k miles on it and is trying get get a inspection sticker without putting in the over $2000. in work the truck needs. Do any of you guys know how to rest the check engine light? I heard that if you disconnect the battery for a while it can work but any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Disconnect battery or using a scan tool

That will not gaurantee the CEL will not illuminate after the first two trips however.

I think you can pull the EFI fuse also. That would save him from resetting his radio presets.

    Fix it the right way.

If it's a serious problem, then even if you reset it, it will most likely come on immediately. Some things take a while to register so you could probably go a few miles without it popping back on, but the inspection people most likely know all the tricks, so I wouldn't waste the time.

But yeah if you get a scan tool (I bought one for my computer at scantool.net), you can manually reset the light. I HAVE done it once on a minor code that never came back, though...

Thanks for the info. He thinks its the catalytic converter and will probably cost more than the truck is worth.
