Has anyone rewired a 3rd brake light on a used shell? I'm trying to decide how I want to do it and I'm thinking I'll just tap into the driver's side brake wire and the two wire pieces that are left, and use those friction fit connectors so I can remove the shell and tail lights still. Does this sound like it would work?

I'll post pics once I can.

I bought my shell used. I bought the leer wiring harness to make the install easier. For the 3rd brake light it's just tapped into the driver's brake light.

Need an extra fused hot wire from the battery for the cap light.

Yeah I don't have the inside light, just the brake light. I just tested the wires to see which ones to tap into and soldered some connectors on between the shell and bed so I can take the shell off if I need to. Still trying to figure out the best way to keep the wires out of the way though

Have the wires hang down out of the shell slightly. Pull the tail light and have the connection back behind there.

I used an e-trailer.com plug & play wiring harness so I didn't have to tap into the factory wiring and it could be easily removed later.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/help-with-wiring-on-a-new-to-me-leer-shell.569853/#post-19144132

I also bought some three-pin quick disconnect plugs, I was ran the wiring through a small gap in the bed (with a couple layers of heat-shrink tubing in this spot for rub protection) so I didn't have to drill, and installed those disconnect plugs in the bed.
With the cap removed I'd have a 6" wire dongle at the top of the bed rail.

I'll ship you a quick-disconnect plug and the other half of my taillight harness if you want to cover the cost of shipping. I didn't wire my dome light, so I'm not sure if there's constant power at the taillight or not.

My ARE came with one of those cheap AA battery powered lights which the cover fell off of after maybe two years. I've had one of those blue, free with any purchase Harbor Freight LED lights in the back now for years. Put the hook side of some sticky backed Velcro on the light and stick it to the carpet. I used a small hole punch to put holes in the Velcro where the screws are so I can change the batteries when needed. It works better than the piece of crap that came with the shell and I can move it if I need to.

I've got a second one of those free lights stuck to the metal part of the bed near the tailgate.

Thanks for the ideas! I already have the brake light wired but I think I'll do the battery powered dome light. That's a great idea!

I usually need to get light in the bed in the winter(summer its light out way longer) and got tired of cold batteries not wanting to work. Originally I had a battery light attached to the roof of the cap. Other problem I had was that I have a unfinished interior. Hard to get stuff to stick to the fiberglass for extended periods of time.
