I’m assuming that the 07 rear diff uses clutch packs.

I put the rear end up in the air and pushed one of the driver tire and the passenger side spun the other direction.

How does one tell if it needs replacement, without opening the diff housing?

a limited slip rear diff does that when you turn one tire the other will spin in the opposite direction. I it is not roaring then you are good to go

Pretty sure that happens on an open diff. Limited slip will either not spin, or spin the same direction.

If OP can get me his axle code off the door sticker, I can tell him for sure:thumbsup:

I mean, given that it was designed to work with 31's

and not handle the added weight of 33's or 35's turning, that pretty much everyone has
I'd say if you have bigger tires, even if the LSD is new, ideally it'd be thrown out and a locker or something installed

    Doesn't need an axle code.
If it's an early TRD Sport it should have a vertical sticker right there on the rear diff that says LSD in red.

It should, but doesn’t mean it’s still there.

Yes it does have 285.70.17 and it does have the sticker LSD OIL thing.

    @TnShooter
If only I had the budget to install a salvage rear diff locker axel.
Not a lot of wrecked trucks where I’m at

I do believe all Sport models in 07 had LSD rear diff, even the Prerunners. But I don't know how to tell when the clutch packs need replacing. I can feel mine working when I off-road.

I know it’s odd, but can you explain or describe it “working”.

A limited slip is a clutch pack that does just that. A good test is to lift the rear end, put the truck in top gear (5th or 6th) and try to spin one wheel.

If the above mentioned steps were taken a LSD (hense Limited Slip Differential) . A LSD will RESIST and spin the other wheel opposite. DEPENDING on how "tight" the clutch pack is Post #2 was correct in that it will act like an open differential but the difference is the resistance. I'm not sure what is meant by roaring? The clutch pack CAN have chatter when slipping (corner or tractioon loss). A "friction modifier additive is designed to help that.

With a Iocker you will NOT be able to spin the wheel. I've never been in a Toyota e-locker but would imagine/hope it is a clutchless true locker? .Ask any old timer what a 9" inch detroit locker sounds like, ha.When AND IF it releived itself youd think you snapped an axle.

I can feel the transfer of traction to the non-spinning wheel. Something uou can feel right away if you’ve driven off-road in a std diff pickup before. I drove an 80’s Nissan Hardbody and a Mazda B2400 before my Taco. I took those trucks off-roading all the time - no 4x4, no LSD, no traction control. They were fun little trucks.

There’s a procedure you can use that test break away torque.
However, I’m not 100% sure it’s accurate on the Tacoma.
Nor do I know what the break away torque should be.

Anyways, Chock the front wheels. THIS IS IMPORTANT.
Raise one back wheel off the ground, leave the other on the ground.
MAKE SURE THE FRONT WHEELS ARE CHOCKED.
Put the truck in neutral and try to spin the wheel that is off the ground.
    It should not spin easily.

Again, I’m not sure if this test applies to the Tacoma.
But like they say, the easiest way to get the right answer on the “internet”, is to give a wrong answer.
If I’m wrong, someone will be along shortly to correct me.
And then you will know how to test it correctly.
