I had my local walmart cut an program a new key for me for 63$. Sounds like the tumblers may be your issue not really the key. Does it work on the passenger side door?

Thanks @Muddinfun your post helped me take out the lock assembly and looked at the tumblers/pins and noticed they were not aligned and so could not turn. The notches in my key were so worn that one of the pins weren't sitting in the notch correctly and so it would not turn.

Should I get a new key? Funny thing is that the same key will start my truck just fine.

Would walmart be able to provide me a key or would I need to go to a locksmith or the dealer?

It was the key. It's so worn that one of the pins was barely sitting correctly and so the tumbler couldn't turn. Was that price at walmart just the key itself?

You shouldn't be going to Walmart for lock & key stuff. Go to an actual locksmith.

Yea I was thinking that too. Now to find a locksmith that actually knows how to program a tacoma key.

You can get pirated Techstream for about $40 or $50, put it on a laptop, and program keys yourself, since you have 1 key that already starts the truck. Go to OBD2innovations. They have their stuff together. You can also do other cool things with techstream.

It was the key and thr programming of it. They do transponder keys and have the machine to program it. The key was 63$ and that including cutting and programming it. Lowes also does and use the same brand keys but they were 75$.

This is the key and model number i bought. They have them in a locked cabinet at the keymaking station with a device that programs the transponder chip based off the key you bring in. has been working fine since buying it. Didnt know they programmed or did transponders so i think its a new feature for them

My key is worn down to the point I can remove it from the ignition with it running and it still opens the drivers side door. I have two blanks ready to go, I just have to get them cut.

All the more reason you need to go to a locksmith. Wallmart would probably just make a copy of your worn out key, and then you would have a brand new worn out key. If I were you, I would take your registration and ID to the Toyota dealer. Tell them you would like to get the key code by VIN. Do not have them make you a key. Just get the code from them. Generally they only keep the key codes going back 10 years, but you're close, so they might have it. Doing this is assuming nobody has rekeyed your truck. Take the key code to the locksmith and have them cut a key by code. You might have them cut a cheap plain metal key 1st to make sure it works. Cheap plain metal keys are great for a hide a key, wallet key, etc.

Ha, yea, I wouldn't go to Wallyworld for this, did get 5 quarts of M1 for $22 this weekend though, waiting on the rebate now. Whenever I get enough motivation, I'll get the code and have it cut.

Future reference for anyone else who may run into this issue.

I ran into an issue where my old truck only seemed to lock the driver's door about 50% of the time. I found out, many months later when I had to replace the broken door handle, that the arm used to actuate the lock had somehow come out of its plastic housing. I popped it in on the new handle and never had an issue since. Knowing that, I have no idea how it actually was locking.

You have to remove the door panel to get to it though.

    Stock for now.. maybe
I'm with this! I have a couple plain metal / 'valets' keys. They will open the truck but won't start the truck (at least in the manual transmission) but its the cheaper way to start and like they said above itll be a great hide a key
