    Hi all,

My trailer plug from the factory towing package was cut and removed (stolen probably), and I need to safely remove the harness because I am going to reuse it. From the attached picture, what do I need to do to remove it without breaking anything?

    Thanks!

You could simply unplug the connector shown, but if that's all you do, you're leaving the plug open to the elements and possible corrosion (and problems) down the road. I'd suggest unplugging the connector with the snipped wires. Next, cut all of the wires back to the base of the connector. Then apply a liberal amount of RTV to the end of the connector to cover all of the stub ends of the cut wires to insulate them. Finally, plug the modified connector back into the harness.

I am reusing that plug for an aftermarket 7 blade connector because I don't want to spend $200+ for an OEM harness. And for things like this, I need pictures or videos. For new Tacoma owners like me, this will be helpful, but for pros like you, maybe not so much. Have a nice day.

Ah, I thought you were simply going to delete the trailer plug. Sorry.

This is what my dad's truck wiring looks like. Not planning to use it, I figured to keep it like this till I have a chance to swap it out with an OEM one. It's broken off the mount and I just hide it up in the rear bumper. I hope it'll be fine like this till I get to it. I was definitely stumped by that clip thou. Thanks.

Ouch! That's awful! I'd suggest at least covering up the open end with electrical tape to avoid the possibility of shorting any of the terminals out until you can replace it.

Here's my plan because I don't want to spend $200 on an OEM connector.

I will by an aftermarket 7 blade connector and solder the 7 wires onto the cut harness I just removed.

And I found this one that should be perfect for my situation:

Before you solder, test the individual circuits to make sure - since you said the wire colors are different - that you have it wired correctly.
