I'll try and keep it brief. I recently got my Tacoma and I was interested in upgrading the speaker system. I am completely clueless when it comes to sound systems. I was looking on this forum and other sites to see what is needed and it just made me more confused. There was all of this talk about having the proper wattage, adapters, and 4 channel amps. I dont need a state of the art premium sound system, I just want to know what the simplest way to make an improvement in sound is. For example, if I were to just change the 6x9 door speakers (if its even a good idea), would I need this 4 channel amp that I hear everyone talking about, or could I just do the swap and call it a day?

Thanks for the help and sharing the knowledge

If you're not going to upgrade the HU or add an amp, there's no need to get new speakers. I replaced the factory fronts with some jbl 6.5's and they were certainly more clear, but the overall sound quality actually decreased.

The stock 6x9 is bassy enough to leave alone if sticking with the stock headunit. If anything I'd solder a capacitor inline to help clean up the very bottom that it can't handle which is way down there. But that depends heavily on the program material often used. You may not need it.

The biggest improvement that can be done is ditching the cheap cone tweeter that you can barely tell is playing and placing something of better quality for improved mid to high frequency reproduction. I'm a fan of raw drivers and one in particular that comes to mind is the Aurasound Whisper thay can be had at partsexpress.com. The little 2" run about less than 20 bucks each and pack a wallop in the midrange with good upper extension that's low in distortion. Use a capacitor around 800hz-1khz or so and maybe a resistor to attenuate if needed. Will help bring the sound more closer to dash level.
