I have a trd cluster and the wheel controls... I was asking around $300 for all but at this point for $150 is yours...

Anyone know if this is possible to do on a 2nd gen? As in taking a 3rd gen cluster and putting it in my 2014 taco?

There is nothing like bringing back an old post from the dead - even a great one like this. So here goes.

    Purpose:
The reason I am posting is several people in this thread asked (like more than a year ago) about what is different with a 2.7L cluster. Well, I found out the hard way.

    Information:
If you stick a 6 cylinder cluster into a 4 cylinder truck, everything will work great. You will proudly go for a drive, adore the multifunction display, and will have convinced your self you are the coolest of the cool. Then, about after ten minutes or so, a Engine Low Oil Level message will appear on your new multi-function display. You will pull over, check you oil, and probably see that your oil is full. You will check it about a dozen or so more times, thinking your an idiot, and now not so cool, each time the warning appears.

So here is the deal. The 2.7l does not have a Engine Oil Level Sensor (just oil pressure). The wiring isn't in your truck. So when the sensor is checked, it reads Open and indicates a fault.

So that is the difference. Pin 36 on connector C9 (the back of the cluster) is for the oil level sensor. This position is not populated with a wire in the mating plug. First experiment was go ground Pin 36 to Pins 17&18. I'm still working on it. If anyone cares, I'll report back.

    exactly his problem.

I see they are looking at Pin 25, the oil pressure switch. The Oil Level sensor is on Pin 36 and that routes through IH2, which is behind the glove box. The 2.7L truck doesn't have IH2 populated.

The 2106 service manual says the oil level sensor is On when the resistance is below 1 Ohm, and Off when the resistance is above 10K Ohm.

The fact that grounding Pin 36 doesn't work, makes me think the power source for the transistor switch/buffer in the cluster comes from one of the other missing pins on C9. I have the common wiring diagrams for the truck, but not the schematic for the cluster itself. That would tell me the rest of the story.

If the oil sensor is on with less than 1 ohm (gnd), wouldn't off be high (+V) instead ? How about sending 12v on pin 36 through a load resistor of say 1k for protection ? Sometimes high impedance doesn't work (drive) for high. You've done a lot more research on this so disregard if it sounds off.

here is the real problem. When you try to ground pin 36, and you ground pin 35 because you weren't wearing your good glasses - what you want to happen doesn't happen.

the Oil Level Low notification goes away if you actually ground pin 36.

So, solution for 2.7L owners with instrument cluster from a V6. Ground pin 36.
