Protip: If you are using your brakes because you're going downhill, try slapping it into manual and in 2nd or 1st gear. Less brakes is more better!

I think that is pretty subjective, double foot driving down a boulder trail helps quite a bit more than coasting in first... to ease your drops and bouncing while keeping your suspension traveling less

But pressing brakes risks a lock up and losing control

sure, if you don't know what you are doing, or doing it wrong, I completely agree. I don't mean that as a blanket statement, just that brake modulation is an important piece to effectively driving especially down obstacles and rock gardens where damage is guaranteed with poor tire placement.

Back before (80s and back), SUVs and pickup trucks became so popular with people who really had no real reason to have one except, it was cool started buying 4x4s almost all 4x4 trucks came with lockout hubs, then came the auto lockers so people didn't have to jump out of their truck in the mud because they forgot to get out and lock the hubs in before they drove into shit where they needed their front axle locked in. Then front wheel drive and AWD came available so anybody and everybody could now go anywhere they wanted and not get stuck because the auto industry said so. Now the auto makers have come up with things like MTS, CRAWL, Auto parallel parking, auto trailer backing, and numerous other crap so people don't have to learn how to drive and do things for themselves.

Exactly. Just because a tool is there, doesn't mean it is the best tool for any and every job. Knowing when to use said tool, Like MTS, is the real key. Descent control for example does NOT MEAN, "I am going downhill, so I should turn that on and it will do the best possible job getting my safely down" It is an aid in a situation where a bit more is needed, or your skills are lacking in a certain area and it makes it a bit easier for certain things.

Whoever the heck thinks brakes should not be be used crawling down certain obstacles and that your vehicle controls will figure it out..... please drive to Colorado and join me on some of our trails. I bet 10/10 times you take that back.

Yep, Coloradoan here. I often put in in first going down a rocky trail as gravity still get the truck going faster than I want. While I'm pretty new to this, there were times when 3 mph was too fast and I spent the majority of the time braking and then letting it "crawl" over the obstacle.

Not sure what "double foot" driving is though. Unless one is the clutch or you learn to brake left and gas right.

And while I don't have an issue with makers adding useful tech, I do agree that people can't drive for shit anymore. When does a safety feature (blind spot), which has value, become a crutch for a shitty driver or even just encourage people to stop paying attention.

Double foot is for auto, sorry, should have qualified that..when braking and applying gas it preloads the suspension (think of a brake stand how a truck 'stands up' ) and allows you to reduce the bouncing off the suspension on descents, effectively helping to 'limit' compression and maintain a higher clearence under the vehicle. It's often used going up hill but downhill it can help in certain situations. I like using ALL the tools available let to me including skills that better off roaders have taught me, MTS, lockers, my hands....:anonymous:

Guess it depends on terrain. I've been on some where brakes would be deadly

Totally! I hear ya, some areas it's straight death. I've made plenty of mistakes especially on really loose ground where it's like, ok buckle up and ride the rollercoaster, that's not a good time.

ya for sure. On rocks it may work fine but on a muddy hill I've always found brakes just make you lose control and you end up either sliding down faster or, hasn't happened to me yet but have seen guys roll cause they ended up getting sideways cause they locked up and slid.
