How would you load a deer by yourself?

On my way home from the grocery store I saw a car coming the other way smack a nice doe. I pulled over and dragged it off the road and called the State Patrol who gave me a posession tag via email.

The person who hit it took off and I absolutely could not load it into the back of my truck by myself. After wrenching every muscle I gave up and flagged a guy down who helped me.

Got me thinking about what I should/could have with me that would have helped? I'm 6'1" and 230 lbs. I wrestled that floppy dead deer for 15 minutes before I gave up.

    What would you have done?

Hm. My first thought would be to rig up some rope/paracord to the metal front tie-down loops in the bed and use that as a pulley system to drag the deer in that way. Probably be easier if you remove the tailgate first so there is one less thing to catch up on.

Second thought is to move the 4 adjustable plastic tie-down hooks that come stock to have two up on the front rail and one on each side.
Tie rope/paracord to the deer then run each end through the front tie down hooks. Then run each side through the side tie-downs, then run them back through the front and pull from there. This will act as a triple pulley system to further reduce the weight/force you need to "winch" the deer into the truck bed.

I didn't think about the 6+ ratchet straps I always have in my truck with me. It would be slow, but probably work as well.

I tried a strap. I stood on the tailgate, squatted, and pulled the hind legs up and held them with a strap while I tried to clear the front half over the tailgate but the ribs kept jamming up on the tailgate and f-n up the whole works.

I honestly thought of a shoulder lift for a moment but the amount of blood coming out its mouth I would have been soaked.

I also thought of gutting it, but I was in a grocery store parking lot between a Target and Home Depot. Didn't want to draw any attention and leave much of a trace.

I'm thinking a come-along and a ramp of some sorts.

What if you had removed the tailgate? Unless you added some anti-theft solution, it's pretty darn easy to remove, @Notoneiota

I have one of those that I use a lot for deer but it was 200 miles away. Maybe I just need to keep it with me in the bed?

I do. I have one of those hook dealys that keeps it from coming off.

Small rope block and tackle is what I mainly use for pulling hogs and such in the back. But it stays in my toolbox

Are you going to leave hanging in your garage with the guts in it? Or did you gut it since you took the picture?

If it is narrow enough, you could rig up some type of angle-iron/l-bracket to store it at the height of the bed rails similar to the AllPro OVERLAND Bed Rack...

It's all taken care of. That was just after we used the ropes to pull it out of the back of the truck. Wheelbarrow underneath was next and skinning/guttin' commenced.
