How would you load a deer by yourself?

Bone saw. Sharp knife, i could have that thing rough quartered in no time, Cut the hams at hip with bone saw, cut out/pull backstraps, shoulders come out without bone saw, slice inside the front shoulder up to spine and remove front shoulder in one piece. Skin at home.

 

Don’t skip leg and back/bi/pull days.

 

I have seen people leave them in there after they picked up a road kill, They didn't know they had to come out. I was sure glad I wasn't eating any of that meat.

 

Interesting idea. I haul air most of the time. May as well keep the hitch rack with me and use it as a shelf or something. I'm going to check it out this weekend when I'm home.

That pic was about 45 minutes after its last breath. I dragged it off the road as it was still kicking a little. It's 32 degrees tonight. It was gutted, skinned, and in pieces in no time.

 

OP said he couldn’t gut it where he was, so I doubt dismemberment would be approved.

 

I knew it had just been killed and I could get it to a place where we could deal with it quickly. I don't normally stop for road kill but no way could I just drive by on this one.

 

As long as the eyes haven't glassed over yet, They are still fresh enough to pick up.

 

I could have. I have all my hunting gear in my truck. I was muzzleloading this week. But I would have had an audience. The Home Depot crowd probably wouldn't care, but the Target ladies probably would have called the cops - even though I already had.

If anything do a quick field dress. You’ll cut at least 20 pounds off

 

Grab a sheet of 5/8" ply from Home Depot for a ramp, then take it back, tell them you didn't notice the stain until you got to your truck. Maybe film the return as well.

I think flaggin a guy down is the right call. I know I'd be happy to help in that situation.

 

Set the ass end up on the tail gate with the legs facing you. Grab rear legs and use them for leverage and roll away from you and it will flop right in.

 

I'm an old, little dude and I've loaded quite a few by myself. Lots of great ways to do it, but rarely does one have any of those handy. Get the head and front feet on the tailgate and hold on for deer life (ha) while climbing on the tailgate, then put your back into it and pull without falling over anything in the bed. Usually have to get the deer head over your shoulder while lifting up, then pin it against the tailgate while climbing in. Sometimes you don't even have to get in the bed to pull. Just get half on the tailgate and start rolling and pushing the rest up. At some point there will be more weight on the tailgate than not and it will then go in quickly. I'm sure it looks funny as hell but I've loaded a few by myself this way. What you can't do is try to put it in all four legs at once.

Loading a bear by yourself is a real bitch though.

If in a hurry, and I mean a real hurry to get it into pieces and be gone, cut the two back legs off around the ball socket, slice the shoulders off, split the skin up the back and grab the backstraps. Less than 15 minutes total. Skin at home.

I've rehomed a few road killed deer myself. A few I have loaded up and taken home, but most have just had the non hit side taken off, skin on, from the carcass. If the deer was hit in the front, grab the back legs and backstraps and leave everything else. Don't have to gut it and you can even dispose of the carcass at that point if you need to without a whole lot of mess. Can all be done quick and easy with a 2 inch pocket knife. You don't need a bone saw to quickly disassemble a deer as there is actually very little that holds it together. Hardest part is learning the hip anatomy, but once you do it's quick and easy to just filet the leg from around the hip/ball joint and be done with it. Never have to get into the guts.

 

Using my folding saw, I was able to cut four 3" branches about 8' long and make a makeshift ramp to slide/pull 2 deer into my bed (both field dressed prior and both weighing 150+). Took some effort, but didn't feel like I was gonna bust a nut.

I usually hog tie the legs together. Lay down in the bed, lift with your arms as high as you can laying down. I start to kneel up and by then its just a simple little tug to get it the rest of the way in. Found that to be the least comical way for any bystanders and was easiest on my back. If I wasn't height deficient, this is the way I have seen others load them in easily.
