Ranger roll into a fireman carry!

Seriously, good on you to not let this go to waste. Its not easy doing this by yourself and I've done it many times. I agree with what others have said about using a ratchet strap though. I hookup at one of the corners in the bed and as I lift one end up (usually the head side) I tighten the strap so I don't lose any gains.

Eventually, I strap up the back end and give it a strained lift using knees.

Dead weight sucks, but I'm better prepared now with a truss on the bed for higher angle use with straps. As a matter of fact, I have those auto retractable straps bolted on the truss so it retracts as I lift!

Road kill around here usually isn't worth picking up.
Last year someone hit a doe in front of my house. There was a giant blood pool, the stomach laying in the middle of the road, and a mess in the ditch 50' away. I found you the guy that hit it in a small SUV just kept going on to work. All it did was break a turn signal. I was sure that the vehicle would have a LOT of damage.

My first thought like many others would be knock the guts out of it. I'm the same size as OP but when absolutely necessary for strength....I summons the demon

Bucks don’t seem to give me a problem loading in. Does are a fight. Having a topper makes it worse. I shot one this season and I had to belly to back suplex it onto the tailgate. I was covered in blood but got the job done. The weight of the deer wasn’t the problem. It was getting ahold of it to get it up.

Saw this on the highway this morning and realized it's perfect for the challenge!!! You can just strap it to the side of the inside bed when not in use probably.

Next to Home Depot. Go in buy an 8' 2X6. Then anchor a ratchet strap to the bed, strap over the end of the 2X, cinch the legs with strap, stand the 2X vertical on the bed. This will act like a boom on a crane. Ratchet away. Ratchet gets full, use a 2nd strap and rig that. Repeat. It'll load.

I was able to move a concrete slab 24x48x4 on my own using this method. The slab was well over 300 lb. I'm 60 yo. Haven't told the wife how I did it. I just told her I ate my Popeye spinach.

I would laugh at someone doing that to deer on the side of the road. I would laugh harder at anyone doing that in a gun fight. It would almost be worth hazing said individual IN said gunfight.

I've done a lot of thinking on this since the experience and I've concluded that hogtie-ing it in a tight bundle would probably have helped considerably. The key being to get the head and legs pulled together so less is flopping around as you're pulling it in.

I may keep some better straps and a come-along in the back with maybe even a strip of plywood or a board or two to use as a ramp.

This type of thing doesn't happen too often - and I usually have someone to help when I'm hunting - but this taught me I need to be a little more self-reliant and resourceful.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Oh, and as for the Ranger roll...I'm not going to do it, but I'd like to see someone try. Who can we get to do it and post it on Tic Tac or whatever video dealy the kids use these days?

This works amazing for dragging one out and if you stand on the tailgate you can pull it right up in the bed of the truck by yourself no problem. Its basically a water ski tow rope but works amazingly well.Screenshot_20201215-212410_Amazon Shopping.jpg

I actually have a water-ski handle/rope that I set aside to drag deer with and I NEVER have it with me when I need it. Every year I throw it in the truck with my hunting gear and every year it is not with me in the woods when I need it. And this year I left it in the garage.

Got to put that shit in the pack, man. My basic essentials hunting items are gun, bullets, a knife and this rope.

Everyone knows if you leave the rope and knife behind, you're going to shoot a monster buck. I've never personally experienced this, but I've heard it told.
