Helical gears in our rear end are cut almost straight yet are helical. They make noise. Go with nitro gears and the noise will be gone. Many who have re-geard do not have the noise.

Noise I can live with and the TSB seems to mostly deal with it. I just wanted to know if 3rd gen owners are going to be keeping the lights on at differential shops in 3-4 years.

Keep complaining to toyota about it. If they have in on record enough times, down the road they may reclaim the failed part if it ever happens.

Toyota and Honda are running on fumes of their legendary reliability they once had. Every manufacturer is cutting corners where they can, so that they can make them cars bigger and fancier while keeping prices low and complying with crap load of regulations and staying profitable.

Mine started howeling at 2k then stopped... every once in a while it does it but it doesn’t bug me. Shit, I’ve gotten used to the cluckyness in stop and go traffic.... I can probably get used to anything after that emotional roller coaster

Just got back from my dealer. Looks like we're going to do the sound dampening TSB. They're ordering the parts.

The tech that was along for the drive when I demonstrated the howling told me in conversation that the worst thing I can do is go on tacomaworld lol. I guess you guys are causing my howling diff after all.

That's my opinion as well. I've owned 6 Tacomas since 1998, and most of them had it and never did anything about it. I did notice that my 2018 has a shim on top of the axle housing. My "noise" is around 50 mph and not very loud. I play my music loud anyway.

Incorrect, I have Nitro 5.29s and I have the noise at about 65-70mph.

I actually had no howl with stock gears but with Nitro I definitely have it

I wonder if you used a heavier did fluid. 140 maybe? Also I have 285 KM2’s and I can still hear it. I just think of it as a supercharger whine.

It is the worst thing. Shit gets way too blown out of proportion here. People think just because they have a problem everyone else must have the same problem too.
The problem is, people with a problem like to tell every one in every thread. They make new threads even though there are big threads with TSB info and good discussion.
    This thread for example.

It's your tires. All tires make noise as they wear. Not likely a diff failure, although there'a bound to be some out there for one reason or another, but you'll definitely know it, If it was, I guarantee.

When you get different tires, it'll be over, but it may be in a different form

It's not the automakers, it is still very competitive out there, but don't take my word for it, just ask GM (General Maintenance Corp). But it could be the new generation of drivers

Nah, complaining over & over is more like insanity lol!
