Just bought a 2017 Tacoma. Noticed howling in rear area immediately. Suspect rear differential. Howling noticeable between 30 and 50 mph. Checked all sorts of things to eliminate air noise and tire noise, not either of these.

Pop-n-lock tailgate. New radio knobs. Rear step.
The loudest noise on mine by far was the lower control arms whistling (search if interested). You might tape those holes up and see if that resolves your howl. If it does help, Toyota has a TSB for this and installs some rubber plugs. I'm still running with my tape (small drain holes punched in the tape).

EDIT - I only mention the whistling of the LCAs because they were quite loud on my truck and occured at lower speeds like 30 MPH. The rear diff howl is typically not near as loud and seems to be most common in the 50-60 MPH range.
