What’s up guys. New here, bought my first taco, a quicksand colored 2017 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 TRD Off-Road Double Cab with the long bed. I thought it would be cool to find others in the area with a similar truck to get your wisdom and pointers but also to possibly buy/swap parts with. I know this is a general welcome to the forum msg but i thought it cant hurt to put all this info out there…i hope to find some local threads in my area (Hudson Valley NY) to put this on as well.

So here’s the plan. I need to progressively do some mods to make my Taco more rugged because we do a lot of volunteer Disaster Relief Construction which takes us all over the place (which means long drives and nights slept in gas station parking lots) in areas where conditions can be rough (no power, no place to stay).
Anyway the list is long but I thought this might be the place to throw it all out there!

Here’s what I’m currently looking for (in order of priority):
-A camper shell of some kind (long bed) and or a ladder rack or bed rack
-2.5”-3” lift kit with bigger tires and heavier rear suspension
-Maybe a rooftop tent or a small camper or enclosed trailer depending on the $$)
    -Black Running boards.
-Any power inverter mod recommendations or offers

    Cosmetic mods:
-I’d love to find someone with a quicksand colored hood in good condition that has the hood scoop
    -More rugged black fender flares
-Black rear bumper covers with sensor holes.
    -Tinted headlights
*Just FYI… I know everybody prefers cash but thought I might as well mention I’m a contractor and am open to trading our services for parts….

    Thanks y’all!!

I've got a similar color 2020 access cab, living about 25 miles from Hudson ny. Question I have is why you'd want to screwup a nice looking truck like that with all that garbage?

Welcome to TW. I'm not an off-roader by any means but just a couple of things to consider:
    • If it were me I'd decide between a rack with an RTT or a shell like an ARE or Leer. Given that you have a long bed you could actually sleep in the back with a shell. A shell and an RTT don't play nice together.
    • Rather than running boards look at rock sliders. If you are going places where you need that lift and those larger tires, running boards won't last long.
    • If you are going to be in disaster areas for several days you might do better with a portable generator and jerry cans for gas rather than an inverter mod.
    Just my $0.02. YMMV.

Thanks! I appreciate the advice. We usually don’t find ourselves in situations where it’s really really off-road…we never know, sometimes it’s just a construction site type terrain and a lot of highway and city driving. The running boards are more for my wife so she can climb in lol.

I’ve thought the same about sleeping in the back if I get a camper shell (cause I really don’t want one of those Roof Tents.). Only problem is the bed of our truck is always filled with lots of tools, so there would be nowhere to sleep. My truck does have the Toyota trifold tonneau cover, which I really like and could sleep on top of that if it were braced from underneath for strength, but it’s not the type of tonneau cover that you could leave on and still put a cap on. That’s why I’m considering a small camper or trailer. What I would like to do is make my own trailer out of matching Tacoma 6’ bed and put a shell on it….that would be kinda

Be careful about choosing running boards. I to got them on my truck for making it easier for the wife to get in, and out of. We nearly broke our necks when winter came with a lot ice and snow build up happened on them. I had a copy of the predator ones on mine. After winter was over I removed them. I ordered my truck with the factory tonneau cover also which I always wanted. I would have bought an suv if I wanted a camper shell. I guess you can always pitch a small tent if you like camping...been there done it. Not a lot overlanding around here, but there are campgrounds. The oem tonneau cover is pretty beefy, but I wouldn't go as far as sleeping on it.

Sorry but I like the black ones I’ve got on the truck. Thanks anyway!
