I have a huge dent in my '02 and am reluctant to pay some guy $800+ to pop it out.

What should I do? Try DIY dent removal?

How about replacing the entire hood? It seems like replacing the hood may be cheaper but I am having trouble finding a replacement.

    Cheers

$800!? You can buy a brand new hood (albeit aftermarket) on eBay or RockAuto for under $200.

Have you tried to knock it out? Might have to repaint it after you move it though.

No I was going to try and knock it out this weekend. What's the best way to touch up the paint afterwords?

Alternatively, is it possible to find a painted replacement hood? Most of the aftermarket hoods I've found are only primed. So then I have to go get it painted $$$$

wow, this is a pretty bad dent

The hood has some kind of X shaped structure on the inside, giving it strenght, so I doubt you can get behind the structure to push the dent out...
well, you can always try to DIY, but I think there will still be something left. You may have to put bondo in what is left and repaint

only way to get an already painted hood is junkyard.
    Replacement ones are primed only

I had a limb fall on mine about 12 years ago and put a big dent in it. I was able to use a rubber hammer and beat most of it out. Luckily the paint didn't pop too. Is th paint flaking on it?

The paint is fine so far.

Yeah - I am going to start searching the junkyards. Seems like a good option. Never done it before should be fun. Already found a few junked white tacomas in the LA area.

    Thanks everybody.

The best route is one from a wrecking. Make sure the color code of the donor truck is the same as yours.
Might take a while to locate an undented hood, since most wrecks have front end damage.

I've gone this route many times, for doors, bumper covers, and fenders.
No need to re-paint. Besides, a re-painted aftermarket hood will look all new and shiny
compared to the rest of your 16-year-old paint. A used hood will have aged the same
amount and blend right in :D

    Good luck

I'd just say get a new hood and paint it yourself. The white in the Tacomas is just a single stage paint, it would be cheap and easy to do yourself with just a paint code matched rattle can.
