All good points, and all true. I did plenty of digging when it comes to the known issues with the 3rd Gen before I bought the truck, but this simply never popped up, now I'm seeing it everywhere. I figured I'd trade the truck in before any of the other known issues like the timing chain cover leak, or the plastic coolent bypass tube.

    From what I can gather this isn't a break-in deal.:notsure:

It's definitely not the Toyota fit and finish that I was used to from the 90's. But I went into it with lowered expectations.

Like my dad's 77 Ford Dually with 4 on the floor with a dump bed. You could hear the rear end from a good distance. Much lower pitch, this is an annoying high pitch sound like in the video.

I am assuming you took it to dealership to have them look at it?

It's a quirky truck for sure, but nothing suggests that it is unreliable. Every day there are new people posting threads here asking why the truck is making this noise and that noise, seemingly baffled by Toyota's lack of QC, yet they still sell 250k of them a year and the vast majority of owners have only minor complaints and rarely a serious issue. If any of these nagging issues were seriously affecting the long term reliability of the truck, Toyota would have fixed them by now, otherwise they have zero incentive. As it sits, we are in year 9 of production, and most people here rarely have issues (particularly on stock trucks) and even more people are completely unaware of these forums and all of these supposed issues, and are instead out using their trucks as intended without a care in the world. The diffs have always wined, the auto transmissions have always been schizophrenic, the A/C whines, they have weird vibrations, etc. etc. ad nauseum, and yet they still outclass every other midsize truck in sales and reliability.

Personally, reliability is #1 for me, which is why I bought my truck. Every vehicle has it's quirks, and if I was more concerned about refinement, random noises, small vibrations, etc., OVER reliability, I would have bought a domestic truck. The amount of people who think there's a problem with their brand new truck, which has so far proven to be a very reliable vehicle over it's production, baffles me. Tacomas are about as idiot-proof as possible, if it ain't broke, don't worry about it. Change the oil and keep up with other standard maintenance and expect 200k miles easily without major repair.

Sorry to hear about your disappointment with the truck. It's not uncommon at all, particularly with new owners as they discover many of the quirks. However, I believe the vast majority of users on these forums are happy with their purchase, quirks and all, because they value reliability, low cost of ownership, and having among the highest resale value (of ANY vehicle) for when they do decide to get rid of it.

Obviously I'm biased, as is everyone on an enthusiast's forum, but I think most people (silently) find plenty of reasons to love their trucks, and the minority (loudly) find reasons not to. Best to move on and find something else that suits you, at least the resale value can ease that transition for you. Good luck.

My truck started doing this soon after I bought it. Once the noise appeared, it has stayed the same for the remaining 40k miles. I can make it come and go with the throttle on level ground or slight downhills.

I agree with TacoGranny above: The 3rd gen can be a quirky vehicle. My 2nd gen was a better engineered vehicle, and I loved almost everything about it. But I have grown to appreciate the 3rd gen despite it's flaws.

Mine definitely quieted down after the first 5k or so. I changed the fluid at that time. I’m at 78k now and the hum is gone.

Well said! I fully expected some quirks. This however is quite annoying to me though. I could see most that don't know much, or care much about cars and trucks, not ever paying attention to the noise. I admit I'm picky and like things perfect within reason. Thanks for commenting.

I'm likely going to bring this up with the dealer, with no unrealistic expectation of a full resolution. If nothing can be done I've decided to just drive it for a year or two and then move it. I was planning on some smaller upgrades, front metal bumper with maybe the pro grill and a new head unit. I knew the sound system and was low end, but that wasn't a big deal and I used to install systems back in the day. Now I think maybe I won't invest In any upgrades.

I put some 75-140 in there at 5k. That shut it up but it had a significant hit on my mpg’s. Florida…:bananadead:
Went back to 75-90 at about 10k and it’s been steadily diminishing.
I get it. Once you hear it, you’re tuned into it. At least break the thing in before moving on

Every truck seems to be different. I’ve had 85/140 dino oil in mine for the last 4.5 months/34k miles and still above 19/20 mpg most of the time. I went with dino as I’ve been in a lot of wet/snow/mud conditions for the last 3 months and water doesn’t mix in as easily with dino as it does synthetic. Thanks ECGS for the advice. Will be changing it out soon as nights up here are already dipping into mid. 20’s to 31 degrees. Probably a dino oil again to deal with moisture before I head back south to VA and get ready to move to WY.

I just find it weird that people have a brand new truck and complain about something go as drastic as wanting to get rid of it when they haven't even taken it in to have it looked at especially since its under warranty. Have it looked at before you decide you want to dump it immediately. Dealership may not do anything but at least have it looked at.

I disagree with 2nd gens being better engineered. my 3rd gen is so much tighter in all things. 2nd gens were truly tin cans. The manual tranny was weird, clutch was sloppy, brakes were clunky, my rear drums always seized up. I liked my 2nd gen but I love my 3rd gen.

Definitely will have it for at least a year, the Taco holds value like crazy, so I'm not worried about the $. I really appreciate your input.

Update I took her out again just now, local farmers market. Anyway it too almost the exact route as I did yesterday. I can definitely hear it, it's at a very specific load speed and speed. The tone changes a bit and has a peak here and there. Odd thing is it didn't seem nearly as bad today. If it doesn't get any worse I can accept it. Maybe around 500 to 1k I'll change the fluid out to some 75-90. It's Ina garage in the winter and really Cincinnati doesn't get that cold for very long.

I concur with your assessment. I was going to get it looked at before I did anything. I have a Dr appointment about 30 miles one way tomorrow, we will see how it sounds with some real heat in it.

Thats bizarre. Never heard of these trucks making weird noises practically overnight, but I guess anythings possible. I'm still waiting for my 2020 to do this. I'm feeling I got gypped.:notsure:
