if i had to pick one shortcoming of my gear..it would be my synthetic underwear. talk about a stinky mess. if we didnt camp near a hotsprings, it would have been awful. i am over it. i am now waiting for a box in the mail. in this box, i will have merino wool base layers.

all i didnt buy was merino wool panties and long leggings. i feel i didnt need to pay the extra $$ for earth tones or camo..i can save a few bucks by buying...plain black.

the camo stuff i have coming is from First Lite..and i will buy the bottoms from minus33.

heads up..sales are coming. i am regular sizes, so all my stuff never goes on sale.

    what are you guys wearing?

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
I use Heat Tech http://www.uniqlo.com/ht_w/us/ it's awesome i use it snow boarding and hunting. I can just wear the heat tech and a t shirt or a hoddie and be comfortable in the snow.

correct. But i have switched the majority of my hunting gear over to UA. I their patterns are second to none. I know everyone uses pretty much the same pattern but UAs stuff just looks so much more clear.

Andy Kirkpatrick is a hardman British mountaineer. His essay "The Art of Not Suffering" pretty much taught me everything I ever needed to know about outdoor clothing systems in inclement weather. As a fellow climber/mountaineer, his insight has been invaluable.

The good news: You can be very comfortable doing damn near anything in damn near any conditions if you have the right knowledge and right gear.

The bad news: The right knowledge is free, but the right gear is expensive.

Anyway, here you go. You can end the thread now:

Fuck a bunch of itchy ass wool, IMO. Are you active or stationary while hunting?

I'm aware of the difference between straight wool fibers and the Merino ones. Only advantage I've found is it still does insulate when wet. I hope your experience is better than mine. Only thing I now own is some blended socks. It may be a person to person thing. Keep us posted.

The Sitka system of layer works really well for me. I'am not a big fan of bulking clothing especially climbing up tree stands. http://www.sitkagear.com/

well, i finally got the stuff. what's up with online retailers these days?

anyway. ripped it all open, put on the lightest inner layer (black) and went for a jog. no itchiness at all. the shirt is super soft!! i was a sweaty mess, but the weather was super cool here..i wasnt chilled at all!

i think this is gonna work. i still have to order bottoms and briefs. but i am going with a cheaper non-hunting oriented company (cheaper)..the colors will be crazier..but who cares. blue bottoms and camo tops looks fine, hidden.

    getting there....
I tend to freeze my ass off when im sitting in my ladder stand or climber and i have tried lots of different base layers. Currently......i am using UA tresstand.......and i gotta say for $85 a piece for top and bottom.......they suck. Cant wear them on a long hike in due to sweating ur ass off then damn near freezing when you get on stand. I guess my next go will be some wool base layers to try. My outerwear is good.........Redbead Tundra Fleece.
