I've always wanted a .257 Roberts (or AI) but never pulled the trigger, so to speak. Also have often wondered why no one has necked down a .308 into a .25-08 (if there is such a thing I'm not familiar with it) given the success of the 7mm-08. I understand we're only talking .5mm in bore. With it being a "new" cartridge you could safely exceed the pressures of the Roberts round, no?

That would be the 25 souper and it's been around for quite a while as a standard wildcat. It doesn't offer much over the 257/257AI other than shorter OAL.

I really like the Kimber Montanas, but the Forbes rifles are good too if you can still find one. Even the Colt light rifles are still available new in the box and can be sent to Melvin for a better stock and trigger for about the same price as the Kimber and Forbes.

Forbes was bought by Barrett and will be in production sometime this year. Not sure what the actual price will be.

The 243 will be a fast twist which means it should handle everything up to the 115gr DTAC, and the 25-06 will be a fast twist for the 115gr Bergers.

I bought a Marlin 1895 SBL lever action in .45-70 for elk hunting this year. It's pretty much a 150-200 yard max cartridge for average shooters which I am. It's only 7 lbs, has an 18.5" barrel which is easier to carry around the mountains, it is more accurate then I am, and I can load or buy any ammo level I want for it; from light plinking fun stuff to heavy loads that have been used on the African big-game. I bought a fixed power 2.3x scout scope for mine on quick-release mounts so I can switch between iron sights and the scope in about 15 seconds.

I have an aversion to bolt actions for some reason. If I didn't have the aversion, a scope on a Remington 700 bolt-action chambered in .308 win is really hard to beat value wise.

Think its been mentioned already but there is at least one wildcat available in that configuration. But there is really no reason to bother with wildcats since Remington took the 6.5-08 wildcat and renamed it the .260 Remington. Its a fantastic little cartridge and would be a good choice for the OP.

I found a gently used (about 20 rounds) Tikka T3 in .270 for $800. Does that sound like a fair deal?

Nope, just 20 rounds of 95gr ammo. Guy says he paid $900 for it.

If it's a base t3 with composite stock- HELL NO. You can buy a new one for $550-$600 without glass on sale.

I bought a new stainless T3 with grey laminated stock in 7mm Mag for less than what he's asking.

Something to keep in mind is the Tikka T3 is the old model. The new one is the T3x. It is an upgrade in stock and some metal components. Not that the prices for T3s will nose dive, but I wouldn't pay a premium for one.

If recoil is an issue go with the 308. The only downside to the Tikka 308 is it is a full size action and you don't get the normal length and weight savings a 308 rifle would normally have over a 30-06.

I have this gun in .270 and it is nice - accurate with a super smooth action. I do think you could find a better price though. Also, go ahead and order new scope rings cause the ones it comes with are terrible.
