I used to live in Eastern Kentucky for 2.5 years back in the early 1980s.
I met a lot of nice people there but also experienced what a lot of people say about Eastern Kentucky.
Always enjoyed going to the city which was either Huntington or Lexington. Very rural otherwise.
I still remember comments like "Boy your dummer than a coal bucket" and" they live so far up the hollar they had to pump the sunshine in and the moonshine out". Also remember my confusion when I got married down there that I wasn't always sure how they were all related to each other. Things stayed in the family. I was also told "what happens in the hollar stays in the hollar".
I was living in Prestonsburg. I literally dodged a bullitt when living there when Okie Bevins walked into Mid Mountain Mack and killed 5 people in Martin Kentucky.
I was just interviewed for a job there the day before. He killed the guy who interviewed me and only 2 people survived playing dead on the floor.
That was one job I was glad I didn't get. I moved back to Ohio soon after that and divorced.
Out doors was great there. We did a lot of 4 wheeling in the abandoned strip mines and stripping old cars out and running them up into the hollows as far as we could before they broke and then walking back out. We always made sure we had beer which was illegal back then. We had to buy it from a bootlegger called Polly Pig. I remember racing go carts in Jenny Wiley State Park until the rangers escorted us out too. It was fun living there but I couldn't make a decent living. I was through there a couple years ago and saw it had changed quite a bit from what I remembered. The changes were good.
Hope I didn't offend anyone. I enjoyed reading some of the posts.

I'm in NKY about 2 hours away and was just dropping in here to see if there was any action but seems to be pretty dead.
