FWIW, our local Costco just started carrying ethanol-free 89 octane. I figure I'll try it to see if there's a difference. Before on 10% ethanol 87, was getting 25.4 mpg to work. With the e-free these past 2 days, 26.8 and 27 mpg on the same trip. Doubt the octane difference has much to do with it. 2016 DCSB TRD Off Road here. And yes, I have done manual calculations, and they were within 2/10 of the truck's electronic system.

I haven't driven on the hwy that much at all, most of my driving is rural roads and short stints on the hwy. One trip from Seattle to Portland about 2.5 hrs, I averaged about 23+ mpg. But this was when my truck was over 5k miles. When I first got the truck it was getting around 16, sometimes 17, then all of a sudden I was around 14-15, once I hit around the 4k miles, it shot up to 19, now at 10k miles I'm always over 20. I also drive fast, 70+ on hwys and always pushing the pedal when taking off on lights stop signs etc, but I have my drive nice times also... I never use cruise control, I hate it, I want to be in control of everything :) Give it some time, I'm sure the miles will go up!!!

I just got back (literally 10 minutes ago) from an hour of driving around mostly on the highway ranging from 60-75 with some 30-40 MPH areas in town and got 17.5. Better than the 16.2 I got going there because it kept getting stuck in 4th gear at 75-80. This thing just isn't good much over 70, even with a relatively flat highway in Kansas.

That being said, going 60 down a country road for 20 miles I'll actually see 23 MPG. But that's about it. I usually get around 18 combined. A little less now with the tires I put on this month but nothing super impactful (C rated KO2's).

For giggles, my V6 Mustang (2015 convertible) got 27 MPG on a 625 mile round trip to Missouri and back and held 80 in 6th going uphill at that. Man I love that thing, but I barely drive it as it's the "weekender" car of sorts. Some days I just want to trade the Taco for a GT, but then I have something large to move or go ripping through some mud on a backroad and realize I just can't give up the truck life

I put on heavier tires and doing 70-75 mph, I get 17.5 mpg. If I keep it 50-65ish mph, I can get 22.5 mpg. Before 24 mpg wasn't too hard to get. This truck really starts hitting a wall at 70 mph. It's got plenty of power, but driving over 65 really kills the mpgs. That's probably normal for most vehicles, but I think some companies sandbag so you get decent mpgs at 70 since that's interstate speed limits for most of the country. Toyota didn't do that.

As far as the OP, If you are doing 3000 rpms at those speeds, either you are driving too aggressive or something is wrong. I'll admit keeping speed in this truck without killing gas mileage takes much more attention.

I'm gonna drive down the big hill by my house and post a 99.9mpg screen shot at the bottom

I did actually get 99.9 trip mpg after getting gas on top of a long hill and then driving down the 20 mile long hill

Took a little trip today to the Flint Hills and back home. This is mostly highway going down the turnpike at 75-80 MPG. On the way there it was pretty much glued into 4th gear trying to maintain 77 MPH. If I took off cruise control and tried to go 75 it would start slipping back down to about 70. It just doesn't have the power to keep its speed without dropping to 4th it seems.

On the way back it was able to stay in 5th more often but still dropped to 4th on occasion. Must have been a bit more downhill. And I use that lightly because this is Kansas I'm talking about. Not those big highway hills in Missouri or anything.

Also, I was laughing as the miles to empty meter was going down faster than I was going in miles. It was a 24 mile drive to the gas station from where I was at when I looked at the meter and it told me I had a good 45 or so miles on the tank. Lol. Got to 3 at the pump and it's still got a reserve of course. I take that thing with a grain of salt.

How much reserve is in the tank?

I put bigger tires on mine and now that I'm at 3000 miles my mpg is a lil better than when I started at 108 miles. I drive 75% hwy at 75mph and 25% city . My dash reads 19 mpg but putting a pencil on it with the bigger tires I'm getting 21mpg. My truck is not searching for gears like it used to either since breaking it in. This is my 4th New purchase on a Toyota automobile and all of them changed gears a lot during the break in period. The Taco,Tundra and the Camry did the same thing.

Roughly 3 gallons. I put about 17.5 gallons in with it being nearly zero to empty and the capacity is a little over 21 gallons. It's fairly conservative.

I would just say that the 16 when compared to my 13 is a lot more dependent on how much gas I give it on take off. If I really ease up to speed and stay off the gas I average 22 mpg. That is in Texas with a 75 mph speed limit. If I really punch it to get on on ramps and taking off i will see that 16-18 that everyone is talking about.

Often times, I actually get better MPG during my city driving than highway. (Most people drive around 75-80 during daily commute) 21 city/19-20 highway
I used to drive a GTI so getting used to slower cruising speeds on the highway is proving rather....difficult. :annoyed:
