I've read some stuff on some very interesting passive fail-safe Thorium nuclear energy.

Mainline locomotives up here in Canada are almost 100% electric, Diesel smoke u see is usually the generators powering those massive motors. Mainline trains can carry over 400 truck loads in one trip, these locomotives are very efficient if u look at how much tonnage was moved in one trip, way more efficient than semi trucks.

European model doesn't work here in North America just because how large our countries are, running power lines through the mountain passes won't work because of the land slides, tree falls etc.

There are some even locomotives that store dynamic braking energy into batteries instead of burning it off in grids of resistors on the roof  The hard part is capturing all that current, batteries are too slow.

The rough number for efficiency of a train is that you can move 1 ton of freight 500 miles on a gallon of diesel.

The best case is to move the long distances by train, then do the last miles by truck. It takes fewer people, more people get to be home at the end of the day, and the efficiency is far better. There's a reason JB Hunt and UPS are huge rail customers and containerized shipping is such an enormous part of the business.

45k is 22.5 tons. Moving that 500 miles at 7 mpg takes 71.5 gallons of diesel. That same 71.5 gallons of diesel could would move 71.5 tons the same 500 miles on a train. Sooo...roughly 3x as efficient.

Yeah, there's more to it than the efficiency for sure. Some loads don't fit on a train, for example.

But for lots of things trains are fast enough, and because I have a BNSF ad in front of me - "BNSF transports enough wheat flour in a year to bake more than 23 billion dozens of cookies"

I can vouch for the Rav4 hybrid boring factor. Wife has a 2018. Nice ride but does not compare to our 2007 V6 Rav4...miss that little rocket.

I would expect the Lexus RX V6/hybrid powertrain or a refinement thereof.

There is something about riding in a compartment pushed on wheels by controlled explosions that just feels and sounds "good". Taking the '03 Acura RSX to work tomorrow and greatly looking forward to it.

Not really. its a battery pack and an engine. plus this isn't 2007, hybrid tech has come so far. If I was in the middle of nowhere I would rather have a hybrid than a ev. Where the hell you going to plug your ev taco in when your in the middle of forest. Generator? well then what's the point. teslas are sweet grocery getters. Road trip cars? nahh.

Fully loaded potash train can be over 30,000 tons, You can do the math. A tractor trailer can only carry 40 tons legally on North American roads.

The future will likely be self-driving electric in the wealthy cities. The poors will still rumble around in gas powered vehicles for many years to come.

To update my post, I spoke to a power engineer last night. If they have too much power and they can't waste it on things like pumped hydro, they just arc it off. So its wasted. Excess power is just discharged into the air in large arcs.

I rented a prius for a week one time because it was available. It was a pretty frustrating experience. I even got a battery error on the little center screen before I returned it. It just wouldn't react quick enough and I thought it felt rather unsafe. I like cars and I would much rather get just about any hyundai instead of another prius when at the executive corral at the rental garage.

In contrast, my friend got a Nissan Leaf and its very responsive and a much better experience than the toyota hybrid. It feels faster than it is, guess that's all about the electric torque.
