But you haven’t driven my truck and don’t know what I’m experiencing. Could be either.

That’s a hard thing to guarantee. It has always driven the same with a small vibration every once in a while when coming to a stop from a longer deceleration.

I feel like this hybrid only thread is racist. How dare you not include ICE owners!

So when this shudder happens to me it’s typically after I’ve been braking gently over a long distance and it always happens when the truck is going from 1mph to 0mph. Not sure if that coincides with anyone else.

Does it feel like it mainly comes from the rear end?

I don’t think I can tell where it’s coming from. My dealer said I can drive a new hybrid and see if the same thing is happening.

I don't know if this is your issue, but there is a point where the car switches from regenerative braking to using the physical brakes (assuming the Taco works like the other Toyota hybrids). It can be pretty rough at times in my Rav4, especially if the rotors have a little rust on them.

Your comment alluded to this but just to make a finer point, the interior of a vehicle is packed with all manner of synthetic materials that off-gas (especially in hot weather). Carpets, seat foam, dash panels, door panels, headliners, seat upholstery (even with natural leather, it's treated with chemicals), flame retardants, adhesives. That's before even considering batteries in the passenger compartment.

So I've gotten into the habit of rolling down the front windows for maybe the first 10 seconds of any drive, just to flush out any accumulated chemical vapors. No way of knowing whether it's really needed since the materials are so varied across models, and I doubt it's something anyone tests for, but I figure it can't hurt to "clear the air" of accumulated chemical vapors before each drive, and it's easy to do.

As far as interior batteries, I have to think they use AGM or sealed lead-acid batteries that, if they have a vent tube, it's vented to the exterior not the passenger compartment. So in theory it shouldn't be a problem. This might be something they actually have to test for, if any battery is in the passenger compartment, but I don't know that for sure.

all batteries inside passenger compartments are vented to outside. mine is also on drivers most side. didnt see any AGM markings on it so i bet its just regular lead acid.

My 4 Toyota hybrids I have owned all had AGM batteries in them. Still waiting on Tacoma to arrive so I cannot confirm.

I’ve had this happen in my wife’s Rav4 Prime. I can recreate it almost every time at the exact intersection by our house. I thought it was just loose gravel or the potholes, or a mixture of the two. It feels/sounds like the wheels locked up and slid on gravel (best description of how it feels) I am not getting the same experience on my hybrid taco though.

For all new to the Toyota Hybrids here is a good link to explain some of the technology and theory of operation. Weber State University (WeberAuto) does some great cut away and disassembly of the entire system. Here is one video explaining the RAV4 systems. This is one of many videos he has done on Toyota vehicles. This certainly is not the Tacoma and I would love to see him get his hands on the I-Force Max to do a complete breakdown and explanation on the operation.

Hearing all of the complaints about stopping and hesitation, I am really curious how the motor/generator disconnects since it sits between the crank and input shaft on the transmission. The transaxle design Toyota uses for there smaller vehicles works exceptionally well and I have never felt the jerking or hard transitions between electric and gas operation. The worst I feel is when the PHEV during highway speed transitions from electric to gas, you really need to push down that pedal to retain speed.

Mine is smooth with no jerks or hard transitions. Have to keep an eye on the tach just to see if it shifted. Just adding to the data.

Question for you all. Are hybrids a good long-term vehicle? We currently own a 13 Sienna and were wanting to replace it with another Sienna but now we see they have gone hybrid on us. My concern is that we keep vehicles long term and with us just retiring this summer I am concerned about long term reliability and repairs. I think I read Toyota had a 5 year / 100K warranty on hybrids but what concerns me is what comes after. This is the very reason we are avoiding electric vehicles. I think hybrids are a great way to go while still under warranty. To avoid this the Honda Odyssey is about our only other option. We need a vehicle that can carry a wheelchair. Opinions and suggestions are welcomed. We are not in a hurry to decide.

Sounds like the wheel chair might not work on any hybrid van depending on what kind of modification is done for the wheelchair. Many of the vans I see have a wheel chair ramp that exits the rear cargo door, those ramps also look like they sit lower than the factory floor. Maybe the upfitter can relocate the hybrid batteries if those are in the way of the ramp. Maybe they aren't in the way?

I think those ramps only work on a front wheel drive nonhybrid van.
