Dude, that's a feature of the hybrid. Disabling it would have me asking why you'd pay more for the hybrid in the first place.

I'd suggest driving it for a little while before getting some warranty-voiding tune, and see if you even notice any issues. This isn't our dad's Auto Start/Stop shoe-horned into a regular car, it's designed from the ground up to work this way.

I get that and for people that bought it for the 1 extra MPG, more power to them (pun intended?). I did not buy the hybrid for that. I bought it for the extra torque... more power to me? Oh jeez. Anyways, I'm in the camp that adding the extra starts to the engine will degrade longevity. Like I said, I don't have mine yet but I believe the water pump is electric while the oil pump is still mechanical, meaning that it stops circulating when the engine is off. And I'm sure the engineers did their homework but I still don't like that "feature". Also I hope to keep this one for a long time. Currently have 310k on my 2005 off-road, so over that long of a life span, reducing startups will absolutely make a difference.

I too have concerns about this new technology..... I think I am going to look at a different manufacture that has been building them for a lot longer.

It'll auto-start stop as it feels the need. You cannot disable it. I've noticed it'll often switch over to electric only if I'm slowing down and am below about 15mph. It'll also stay battery only if you're easy on the pedal up until you cross about 10mph while speeding up. It'll kill the engine and alternate between engine and battery when idling as it sees fit. I almost never hear the engine idling when I'm stopped at a light, a stop sign, or in traffic.

I have a few questions on the start-stop behavior maybe someone can answer:

What if you're in a long line at a fast food drive through, creeping forward about 10-20 feet at a time, over a 15 minute span. Does it make these small moves on battery only, never starting the engine, or does it start the engine with each creep forward, then shut off again; repeat?

Same question, but does the behavior change if it's the middle of the summer on a 110 degree day and you need the AC on full blast 100% of the time?

From a "cold" start, is the start-stop disabled until the engine oil temperature (or some other collection of sensor temperatures) reaches say 200*F, however long that takes?

Not sure about the Tacoma, but I've had two other Toyota hybrids. It will be electric until the battery is discharged to a level that triggers the gas engine to fire up to maintain the battery and run auxillary drains. This could be immediately on the Tacoma. On the Rav4 the engine is churning at a very low level in these idling situations. It then turns off after a few minutes, typically.

drive thru would be all battery. ive used cruise control at 30mph and it only used battery for the mile long trip. as long as your not going through elevation changes its pretty easy to use only battery with cruise.

I have seen the engine turn back on and off when idling with AC on...same goes for heat. pretty sure any HVAC setting will make the engine fire up more.

light 1984 your not gonna be happy with how often the engine starts and stops then... in eco mode it will run the a/c with engine off. and heat also. the a/c compressor is an electric compressor. the truck has dual water pumps. one mechanical, the only thing the belt turns. and then an electric one for when in auto stop. ive never seen a vehicle with an eletric oil pump tho.
on to starting. im pretty sure it uses the hybrid motor to start the engine 99% of the time. it seems to start within 1 revolution! but when i had mine on lift last week for oil change i noticed it also has regular style starter.
the hybrids also do not have an alternator... i think they use some sort of Dc/dc converter to charge 12v battery from main hybrid battery.

Great info, thank you. Like I said, I'm sure Toyota did their homework, so I'll roll with it in the interim, but will get a tune when available. I did see someone say sport mode and gear limiter to 8 keeps the ICE always on. Will try that too.

Ok, so I picked up my OR I-force Max today..OMG, this thing is so amazing! It does shut off a ton, but I can confirm that it can be bypassed by going into sport mode and setting the gear limiter to 8. Not as easy as a defeat button, but glad it works!

glad that is a thing. i dont mind it mostly but sometimes when im driving around town and speeding up and coasting down a lot its turning off all the time!

also my first screen on my dash shows boost and hybrid boost gauges. very cool to see when and how often hybrid boost is applied!
