@Barnburner To answer question #2 from the OP: The 6 speed manual transfer case has a 22 spline input shaft rather than the 23 spline input shaft that your current transfer case has. I'm pretty sure the input shafts can be swapped though. I've been wanting to see someone do an AWD Taco, so I'm anticipating this coming to fruition:hattip:

Ok so I skimmed the majority of this and your got a lot of good info already.

The 4Runner tcase I'm useing if from an 05 4Runner, it does have awd and 2wd however the Torsen center is don't by the computer not mechanical. Maybe the older 03-04 4runners had mechanical Torsen but there a different case.

With using the fj/runner cases with center diff you will need a fj/runner front drive shaft ( just cause it a bit longer) and have the rear shaft cut down a few inches.

If you keep the electronic controls for the center dif cases you will need to get the new diff plug and wire it since there is more switches, the add will be the same. youll also need a new plug and new 4wd computer as well as add in the wiring for the cab mounted center locker switch.

I haven't had much snow to really test how the awd performes but I use it on trails all the time and almost never have to lock the center

    @Barnburner
    https://www.marlincrawler.com/tech/transmission/transmission-gear-ratio-chart

If you look up the 2 trannys that you mentioned one is a 19 spline the other is 23 so you'll defiantly have to be swapping input shafts

Thanks man, I really appreciate it. Good to know about the electronics & front driveshaft. I started reading through your build thread, but have more reading ahead of me. When you say the 4Runner center diff is controlled by the computer, do you mean diff lock is electronically controlled vs mechanical (with a lever)?

Interesting... I wonder if I could just bypass the 4runner VSC toggle and keep the stock Tacoma setup in place.

You can keep ECU isolated from 4X4 computer or build the like connections

It's controlled by the 2-4 shift lever which is driven by an electric motor.

When you do a set up line mine the 4wd computer only controls the 4wd parts. When I tied it into the truck the only 2 wires that the 4wd computer and truck share are the vss(speed sensor) and nutural safty switch.
The vsc on the 4Runner will be controlled by a different computer and is not needed. With your 15 taco it might be more interconnected but if you can get a wiring schematic you should be able to set it up where everything will communicate and work correctly

If you can benefit from AWD then by all means please do, I considered this when doing my conversion.

Don’t think of the ADD and front diff being one and the same; the ADD is only one side of the diff and easily removed/swappable. If you do decide to delete the ADD you don’t need to buy the FJ tube; I removed the actuator, welded the slide in the ‘locked/on’ position and made a plate to cover the hole.

    Edit:
I did remove the tube from the side of the diff and removed the shaft to weld the sliding piece in place. The pic is before installation on my 4x4 conversion. I suppose you could clean and mig it from under the truck.

@Barnburner you will have a hard time trying to mate the fj t-case out of a maunal trans. the output splines on the trany from the r155 in your truck to ra61 are different. if i remeber correctly your output splines are the same ans the automatic t-case and in all automatic tacomas- no matter the engine. good luck.

Thanks for the heads up @05Taco4x4!

@rheath08 10-4 on the splines not being the same. Looks like a t-case shaft swap isn't too crazy to do.

I still revisit this idea from time to time.

Just to keep track of it - the PN of the GX460 transfer case I'd most likely use is 36100-6D401, while the 4Runner is 36100-6D400

So let me get this straight. After reading thru this thread, the manual FJ's had AWD and could be locked into 4WD Hi or 4WD Lo. The automatic FJ's had 2WD and could be put into 4WD Hi or 4WD Lo.
I think on a truck AWD would be awesome. Especially in the rain. I have 200 LBs of gravel near my tailgate and I still get wheel slip from a stop. This is taking off slowly. With AWD the front wheels would get the majority of the traction and hopefully no wheel slippage. Unfortunately for me I have a prerunner.
Why did Toyota have two different systems for the FJ?

Awd is still biased to the rear. In awd I can break the rear tires free on snow/dirt
But I don’t get the “hop” or loading and unloading of the frame when going in and out of traction spots

    Thanks Yamadirtrider.
I found this on the FJ forum:
"The manual has permanent 4WD for use on any surface, with a limited-slip center differential that sends 60 percent of the torque to the rear axle in normal driving. It can automatically transfer up to 70 percent back there, or a maximum of 53 percent to the front axle when slippage occurs. The transfer case lever can be used to lock the center diff for a 50/50 split, and to engage an additional low gear for off-roading. In normal use on snow and wet pavement, automatic mode should be more than enough. The 50/50 lock might help when stuck and in low gear.

The 4WD that's teamed with the automatic transmission is actually less sophisticated. Rear-wheel drive is the default mode. Here the transfer-case shifter engages a part-time, 50/50-split 4WD that's for use only on slick surfaces. (Dry pavement causes binding and possibly damage.) Another setting engages the low gear for off-roading. A locking rear differential, controlled by a dashboard button, is optional."

That’s the fj. Look Up 4th gen 4runner with the v6 multimode tcase.
Or look through my build thread. there’s also an awd taco thread with lsd front diff
