    This site was probably the most helpful and looks good for future reference on knots (you don't want to tie knots in winch rope if you can avoid it as it greatly reduces the strength)

    As far as using the extension as a fid, I just kinda stumbled on it but it really does work well.

    It'd be slightly cheaper to buy some in bulk and make them vs buying a bubba rope.
