Yes, first pad change. Really just giving Brandon some grief for fun.
Just threw in some cheapos from autozone. They seem fine to me. Truck stops.

Racing motorcycles taught me the value of good brakes and their role in going fast. Biggest braking gains however, were achieved with new calipers, lines and master cylinders. Absolutely none of this applies to my truck.

Lift, armor and such. Money pit, check out the build thread...
I used to work with a guy who bragged about getting almost 200k out of his brake pads in his Jeep Wrangler. I asked him his secret and he said “it’s all in how you down shift!” Mind you he was on his third clutch by the time he replaced those pads. I’d rather swap out some $25 pads every now and then over burning out clutches

No need to destroy clutches to save brakes. No need to destroy clutches to downshift for that matter. They're similar things in my mind. Friction material. Except that in the case of the clutch, it's normal operation is to be locked up with the opposite surface and the normal operation of the brakes is to be separated from the opposite surface.
The way to maximize each is to limit the time they're slipping against the opposite surface. Don't slip the clutch or ride the brakes any more than necessary.

The Ranger I had before this Tacoma was a standard transmission. I had the slave cylinder go out at 160k. Because it's a concentric slave cylinder, the tranny had to be dropped. My clutch had 75% remaining on it.

Ever follow that guy down from Evergreen who's brake lights were on the entire time? He's the one who has to replace his brakes all the time and he's the one that makes it stink like burning brakes at the bottom of the hill. I'll brake harder for a shorter duration rather than drag the brakes all the way down the hill.

This truck is an automatic so it's a little harder to conserve brakes.

Threw in an additional transmission oil cooler today....

In the past, I've seen the transmission temps climb above 240 when crawling up a trail in 4lo at low speeds. Maybe this will help :notsure:

Holy shit. 240? Damn that is high. I know they run hot but mine has never gotten that high.

Well that's going from memory way back when we did the alpine loop. Maybe it wasn't that high? I know I set my warning on the torque app to 210 and exceeded that by more than I was comfortable with so I parked at the top of one of the passes and popped the hood for a while.

@thefatkid and @lotsoftoys have mentioned that Toyota trannies run hot. I have hit 220 under throttle in the mountains but not any higher then that.

    What say you guys?

Under a load of no? Towing my trailer fully loaded my tundra has hit 220 ish. Being super mean to it.... if it was above 230 range I'd start to get worried.

Have u verified proper air flow? Take a peek between the radiator and condenser? Also fan clutch working correctly? That's too hot... also I'd get new fluid in it. Toyota fluid and make sure it's set to the right level

Not much room between radiator and condenser.... don't think there's a problem though and I doubt it overheats very often.
I just remember seeing high temps when going real slow up a trail in 4lo for a long time. I figured the extra cooler couldn't hurt.
I did flush all the fluid but I didn't use oem. Used valvoline maxlife. Same stuff I had in there from before and it came out looking and smelling fine to me. I want to keep this truck for a long time and any AT vehicle I've had in the past has been eventually "totalled" by trans problems. I wasn't going to buy an auto when I got this truck but the manual was impossible to find and I heard good things about them. Having driven a standard 2nd gen, I'm glad I did. Hated the clutch and "box of walnuts"

Don't blame u there, I like the autos more then the 6 speeds in the second gens. I don't know much about that valvoline fluid but if u continue to have problems u may want to think about one fluid.

Reason I talked about between radio and condenser is because it is a common area for a bunch of shit to accumulate and restrict airflow. Trans cooler is last to get air pulled through it by the fan when moving slow. If your trans got that hot, I'd be curious to know your coolant temp too???
