I’m an idiot, cranked the truck while it was running.

As the title says... Went to a work dinner with the wife last night, it was storming pretty badly when we were done so I remote started (thanks N2 designs!). After running my wife with the umbrella to the passenger door, I quickly made my way to the drivers side, got in and cranked the car while it was running. Made a screech noise and I quickly stopped and realized what I did.

car kept running fine and made it home, got up for work today and everything seemed fine. This is my first new vehicle ever and I just wanted to know if I damaged something long term? I’m barely at 600 miles *facepalm*

Oh yeah, big time dude, like it's total dickered.

Well at least your pride is for coming humble to the forum.

    Welcome aboard.

Your truck ia just fine maybe a tiny bit of wear on the flex/fly ring gear and starter spur but you good Holmes.

    Everybody does it.

I've done it myself in a few cars.

The components were engineered with that possibility in mind nothing is wrong with the truck.

I mean make it a habit and you'll be replacing your starter before too long but once or twice in a blue moon makes no noticeable difference.

You're good. Happens all the time. Worst case you would fry the starter

I have done this far too many times to count in my college days to a few cars. When a car is your primary hang out spot during those late nights and you need the heater running, you tend to forget if the engine is running or not. I don't think you need to worry about anything.

Happens less now that most of my cars have push to start..

Yes, I have an SR with a keyfob. When you remote start (N2 module) you have to turn the key 2 clicks to ON before driving off otherwise the vehicle shuts off

thanks for the responses, I for sure will pay more attention from now on.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
As others have said, you are not alone in committing that faux pas - relax, all should be good.
Bet it'll happen again at some future time.

I don't believe modern vehicles still allow this. You would think that there would be a safety feature to prevent it. I did it a number of times on my old S10.

You’d think right? I was surprised too when I heard the sound. Thankfully it was no more than 2 seconds until I realized what I was doing and stopped. I know push button cars don’t have this haha

Ok so I’m reading this and it’s sparked my interest....

    1. You remote start the vehicle
    2. You walk outside while it’s started and open door
    3. Get in and start car?

Problem I’m seeing is the truck shuts off when you open the door after remote start unless I’m unaware of a change made to the remote start system. Or, you got in and started it again and then tried to start again after that or am I missing something ?

you are correct but the door shut off is only on vehicles with push button(Mine a regular key that you have to click to the ON position otherwise tapping the brake shuts it off). So it was still running when I got in distracted by the weather.

I had a 15 F150 with factory remote start and it wouldn't let you do it. No matter how many times I'd tell my GF she only needs to turn the key to run every single time she would try to "start" it. Car wouldn't engage the starter though. Assume its a pretty common thing that factory systems account for.

The door thing is only on push to start I believe.

If the action severely damaged things I'm thinking this would have been done decades ago. It would be easy enough to program a cut off maybe based on alternator output to prevent it. But since unless you do this continually, not much damage is done, I guess they figured it's not necessary.

W....WHAT!? I thought the auto shutoff with the doors happened on the key start too! What the Dickens!? I would totally downgrade to an SR or an SR5 now!

Ahhh ok. Ty for clarifying. Was somewhat secretly hoping you found a way around the auto shutoff when opening the vehicle door. :)

Is it an aftermarket remote start?
