I’m getting a new frame. Or do they still do the buyback?

So I just bought this tacoma TRD SPORT. 07 with 192k crew cab short bed. Always wanted one and I needed a truck so. It’s pretty nice and been taken care of. Always a southern truck also. So I google to see if there is any TSB’s and there were 2. Propeller shaft to cure the vibration issues which it did have tho very small and a frame inspection for rust. So the dealer calls today and said that he had 2 good news and one bad. The bad was that the rear differential when the tires were off the ground had a tight spot in it when they rolled the tires which may be the reason for the vibration at 60 mph. If so that wouldn’t be under warranty. Again it’s not that bad but I wouldn’t take it on a long trip. 2nd the propeller shaft and u joints were under warranty so he would replace all those and 3rd which blew me away is that they would need to replace the frame with a new one. I was like seriously? I asked what that entailed and he said everything comes off. Takes about a week. So is this a good thing or bad? Seems like a big undertaking to me. Is there a buyback? Heck I would probably sell it to the dealer if so. What do you guys think? Thanks.

I heard when they replace frame they also put new fuel lines and brake lines so that’s a plus .... if it isn’t gonna cost any extra I’d go ahead and replace it they are known for having bad rust issues that’s why they replace them

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
So the truck is "nice and clean and taken care of" and you're going to get a brand new frame plus extras for free...but you want to sell it?

I'm confused. Sounds like a sweet deal for you. You buy a nice truck and get a bonus to go with it and you don't want it anymore.

The rear diff might be nothing. It made it 192k without exploding. I say tell the dealership thanks for the advice and drive it.

I’ll be happy with keeping it and appreciative that toyota is making things right however, at 150% of kbb excellent condition (what the last buyback was) I’ll sell it. Not sure who wouldn’t.

New frame is good. I’d never buy a 1st or 2nd gen UNLESS it had a new frame

A little something every chance we get.
I JUST got a note in the mail from Toyota on 10/21, and the warranty for Frame Rust Issues is extended until 1/3/19. YOU SHOULD FULLY TAKE ADVANTAGE if you got a notice. I am FOURTH owner, but registered on Toyota.com, or I would not have gotten this. I will have it inspected. If they take action, I can afford the time. It WAS inspected under a former owner, but I have no detail. This is a NO LOSE situation.

Will do. I didn’t get a letter but I did happen up on it online so I called my dealer and they ran the VIN and told me to bring it in. Got the word today that they would be ordering a new frame.

Congrats on the truck and new frame + extras OP.

Crazy to think how much Toyota must make to be able to replace frames for free on a gazzilion truck...

    Welcome to TW!

The buy back was for 1st Gens, not 2nd Gens.

The replacement takes about a week... when they get the frame in. It could take up to 6 months to get a frame in.

It is a big undertaking. I hope when mine has to be replaced its no longer my primary vehicle.

But it is what it is.

And honestly, its something you should have looked at before buying the truck...
You know about the buy back which means you knew to look for rust...

There are a ton of frame replacement threads to read about peoples experiences.

This is a no-brainer to me, unless you all of a sudden decided you don't want or need a truck anymore. Get the frame replacement done + other free warranty fixes

    1. This is my 6th vehicle. I have plenty of cars/trucks to drive while its in the shop.
    2. I crawled under it with a creeper, saw nothing.
    3. The dealer said that the failure point was hard to see and there was no "visible" rust except near where the engine and transmission meet as the joint had started pulling apart.
    4. I did know about the buy back back in 08-09 but not this one.
    5. Some people have little mans disease

They did buy back my first gen, I made out like a bandit. Rolled that cash into my brand new (at the time) 2010 TRD Sport. Still going strong!

They will take care of you, OP.

Only early model 1st gens were bought back from Toyota...97-00 or something like that. Later model 2001-2004 and on up get frames replaced. They haven't done the buyback program in many years
