I’m sure this is a stupid question, but did I make a mistake with my fuel?

    few things here and there.
    So..

the gas station I stopped at just got new pumps. For some reason… each type of fuel is labeled “87” including diesel! (All yellow too!)

    Anyway,

I accidentally filled up the truth with ethanol free gas. Is this bad? I mainly use that on small motors like my tractor, etc.

Is this bad? Should I like.. drain it? Lol. I’m sorry I’m not wise to this stuff. I only ask because a quick Google search gave me conflicting answers. I trust y’all over Google though. Thank you.

One tank no big deal. But I'd report the station to whoever regulates them. Some poor slob is going to fill his tank with diesel and be in for major headaches. Of course, some guy driving a diesel could also put gas and then replace the entire truck when it the engine overspeeds and goes all to pieces.

that’s what I was thinking! I actually did go in and let them know. They shut that pump down and actually offered to give me my money back. I declined, but I was honestly just worried for the next person. Never seen anything like that. Didn’t even know some service stations had dedicated mainlines for ethanol free.

Some would say ethanol free is better, not sure I really care unless it's sitting for a year.

I usually run ethanol free gas. It’ll run just fine.

I realized it was nearly four dollars a gallon by time it was full. It better be a little better for that price lol. (Regular here in the south has been right around 2.50)

Ethanol free won’t hurt your taco one bit. Just your wallet. I use ethanol free gas in all my small engines.

Ethanol free gas what you want. That's all l ever use. I use it in my trimmer and my lawnmower. It's what gasoline used to be

Haha, putting ethanol free is not a problem, like, at all. Like others said it’s probably better.

If you filled up with diesel, that’s a big problem. In college, my friend filled up his accord with diesel, lol. Big problems.

And engines used to be designed to work on ethanol free gas. There were some issues when the 10% ethanol gas 1st came out and was put into engines not designed for it. But that hasn't been a problem in a LOOOOOOOONG time. Even with small engines like lawn mowers etc.

Using it in a modern engine won't hurt a thing other than your wallet. It won't run any better, nor get any better fuel mileage either. If you're still driving a vehicle made in the 1970's or earlier with the original engine then it might be a good idea to buy ethanol free gas.

I also buy non ethanol gas for the mowers blowers and trimmers.
A few years ago non ethanol could be had at 87octane. Now seems it’s all 92 or super along with the super $ per gallon.
If I use ethanol in the small engines due to price I add stabil to the main gas cans.
I go thru gas to quick in the truck to worry about the ethanol but I do run non ethanol super every so often.
Probably a waste of money but it makes me feel like I’m doing a gas treatment?

No harm to the truck, only hurt your wallet.

Modern engines are happy burning E10 (10% ethanol) or E0 (no ethanol).

I've been burning E10 in all my engines since the late 70's. My first car was built in 1963, it burned a blend of E10 & used motor oil, leaked everything else. It had 3 wheels in the junkyard. Trimmers, lawnmower, motorcycle, ninnivan, pickups, SUV.......all eat E10. Never had a fuel related issue.

I don't buy E0 due to price and really no need to burn it.

Wouldn't waste my money on ethanol free gas or so called "high test". Think about this why do high performance stuff burn ethanol? Ethanol has a higher octane rating than high test. I run standard pump gas in every engine I own (exception being the diesel tractor!) chain saws, weed whackers, generators etc. Now as far a engines that sit for a year or more like snowmobiles and such I wouldn't leave any thing in them unless it had additives for long term storage.

Two octane numbers to remember. “R”esearch which is a theoretical number And “M”otor which is determined by actually running in a special engine that alloes adjusting the fuel air mixture until it “knocks”

The pump octane number is R+M/2. Research is always higher while Motor is more indicative of actual operation. Research is always higher so using this method to calculate octane is sort of BS.

The ethanol burning engines mentioned use fuel with no additives. Then again their life span is measured in hours, and not many if those, rather than miles.

The ethanol use in motor fuels was a government mandate just like MTBE. Once mandated engine manufacturer’s had to modify their product to operate on the fuel blend.

It probably varies from state to state, but here the pumps are marked “May contain up to 10%ethanol”. So you really don’t know what blend you are getting. But engine manufacturers know this a design accordingly.

It’s also why the Tacoma manual says to use fuel with no more than 15% ethanol.

But getting back to the original issue, ethanol free fuel actually runs better with less tendency to ping.
