I bought the 04 titan (DC 4*4) when they first came out and bumped the timing 2 degrees, S&B intake, Banks exhaust and yes for sometime killed every Hemi, Chebby and Ferd on the road I could find that would go. that thing was just wicked fast and gas was 1.89 gal, then it spiked to over 3 bucks a gal and I was only getting 15 tops, 11-12 towing a light trailer. Then the new tundies came out and stock those would beat me..I traded in for 08 taco I have now and went for the mudder truck (3rd taco I have owned) for the price of the titan you get a lot of truck hands down. If I was to get another fullsize it would be toss up Ferd or Yota, they hold their value better compared to the titan - my ass still hurts from trading in that titan.

Nothing wrong with the Titan, I had an 04 that we traded in last year for a Rav4 for the wife. Different truck than the Tacoma for sure, but a good truck. I averaged 16 in town and 18 on the highway.

Comparing a full sized to a mid sized on a Tacoma forum. I never understood these threads.

I say go for it and join a Titan forum.

I think it's perfectly relevant to compare them.

I think you see it so often on here because the Tacoma isn't really a midsize. When you look at all the dimensions it's only inches smaller than a current fullsize and in almost every dimension it's the equal of a fullsize from a couple generations ago. Capacities are about the same as an older fullsize too.

If this was say an '80s Mazda B2200 forum where everyone is driving 4 cylinder really small trucks with towing capacity of maybe a small utility trailer you wouldn't see the comparisons because that's a totally different animal.

On this forum though you have people who need seating for 4, have a 24' travel trailer or a ski boat that size. 90% of the time they're getting groceries and going to school & work and the truck is great, the smaller size & engine is an asset parking and at the pump. The other 10% of the time it does the job but it's towing and hauling at or near capacity and they wonder if they should upgrade to a heavier duty truck. But does the extra capacity for 10% of the time warrant the extra bulk all the time? Can you get by for the family vacation towing the RV for 2 weeks so you can have the smaller truck the other 50 weeks?

It would be different if someone bought a triple axle race car hauler to do a competitive race circuit and was comparing their current Tacoma to a F350 Diesel. That's a stupid comparison, those are different animals altogether.

I've always liked the Titan. I honestly like its look better than the Tacoma (not by much, though) and especially the Tundra (hate the way the new Tundras look). But before I bought my Taco, I had a 2004 Nissan Altima, which treated me like shit. So I opted to go for the Toyota for that reason only.

I have an 08 Titan 4wd and love it. I am looking to trade mine in on a taco though because of gas pries coupled with the fullsize payment I got from trading in an upside down truck on another expensive truck. They made A LOT of improvements in the 08's like MUCH larger brakes, stronger rearend, higher ride height, MUCH nicer interior and the awesome VVT (came out in the 07's). The VVT engines are much stronger than the previous model and pulls hard all the way to redline. I ran a 14.85@92mph with nothing but a hypertech on 87 tune and a magnaflow exhaust! Even on 35's (325/65/18) my truck kills everything on the road but the new GM 6.2 and the tundra unless the tundra is on 35's too then it's about dead even. They do have horrible resale value though and get pretty bad gas mileage, although the gas mileage also improved with the VVT engines. Mine when stock would average around 15 in town and high teens, almost 20 on the highway. Nissan are idiots though an they're all but killing the titan with zero advertising and no major upgrades since it came out in 04. What's worse is they have a new version of the 5.6 that makes ~400hp stock that they have in the new QX56 mated to a new 7 speed auto that they refuse to put in the titan to keep it competitive with all the new engines everybody else has now. Oh well, I need something cheaper that gets better gas mileage so i'll be missing mine soon.

    Bone Stock.....for now.
Previous Titan owner here too...had an '04 extended cab 2wd (with a leveling kit and 33" Nittos). I gotta say, I freakin' loved the V8 power in that thing, as said above, it would kill just about everything on the road. I attributed it more to the close ratio 5sp transmission than the engine itself. Also, yeah, 15mpg everywhere I went. I was asked over the weekend if I liked my old Titan better than my new Tacoma...answer is Tacoma. It just feels nicer to drive. More comfortable, quieter, and I honestly like the size of it better than the Titan for my needs. I also do not miss having to put the Titan in the shop every freakin' month for another TSB, or my rotors warping, or the endless number of rattles that would drive you crazy.

OP- go buy some leather seat covers and an iPhone and keep your Taco!

Seems the most important thing to you is interior chotchkies and being able to out-muscle other trucks at stoplights.

    Get what ya want man...
